Just checked the MOT history on that one, 264,000 miles at December 2015. That's a lot of fuel in one of these! The advisories on the 2012 test would cause me some concern. Lot of money for the miles IMO. bmthnick1981 said:

Nice but not a big fan of the ALPINA sticker on the front spoiler, is that an original thing?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bmw-E38-740I-Alpina-Rare...yUAAOSw2ENW8Bmb

While I'm here.. this looks a peach
Probably worth buying to sell back to the merc dealer bit by bit minus a restocking charge if all the receipts are still there...

This looks super-subtle and sounds like the right kind of car to buy, possibly sub-thread budget.

(The ad text comes out weird on y computer but reads fine on my iPhone. Not that I spend too much time looking at cars on the internet.)

I have been getting that weird stuff too, think its a bug in the system. I almost bought one of these last week., This looks promising, MOT history isn't bad too, just a corroded spring or two....http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mercedes-E430-one-owner-...

I must say, having compared many BMWs and Mercs, that the BMWs always seem to have more MOT advisories than the Mercs. I have not yet found an E39 5 series 530i or 540i without yearly advisories, yet several Mercs that seem to just fly through MOTs. So, aside from rust, is the old W210 actually a shrewder barge buy than an E39?
This has come up (relatively) locally: Sparse ad, but hopefully rot free and it does look clean....

This CLK is cheap, are they any good? Pretty good spec for the money....

That is a bit like asking whether, aside from the psychotic tendencies, would Alex Forrest make for a better off piste adventure than, say, any other female character that cinema has to offer.harrykul said:

I just don't like the r129 in that colour combination!https://www.gumtree.com/p/other-cars/1990-mercedes...
Right...
I've never wanted a big, old Merc - well not until I started following this thread, but the enthusiasm you guys seem to have has made me wonder whether it's something I should think about, as I'm approaching middle age...

£700 is the sort of money id be happy to gamble with, and that's not far from me, I understand these 90s e classes aren't the most desirable but it looks good? No?

I have a diesel S210 and used to have an E320 petrol - mechanically neither have been any bother at all. Very reliable.
My current car, predictably, has been a bodywork nightmare though. I should have known better but it actually looks pretty smart because most of it was resprayed under warranty! Both front spring mounts, various little patches to the inner arches (concealed by the plastic liners) and loads of scraping back/repainting underneath has been needed. I had to have the spring mounts changed twice because the first garage made a bodge of it.
All in all, a right pain in the backside. If I had to replace it, I would go for an S211 and take a gamble on SBC issues because mechanical work is frankly less grief.
