This looks super-subtle and sounds like the right kind of car to buy, possibly sub-thread budget.

Great minds. I spotted that last night and had a bid. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mercedes-E430-one-owner-...

I kind of wish I hadn't taken on the 140—I'm seriously thinking about cutting my losses on it—because this sort of thing would be right up my street. The 140 is far too big for me and my example, I'm afraid, is depressingly too far gone for my pockets. That and the inevitable uxorial displeasure that will follow upon disclosure of its true ownership.
Nothing to add other than thank you for introducing me to the word 'uxorial'. Actually I do have something to add, keep the W140 they are much better than 210s!GreenArrow said:

Uxorial. Great word that.
But you can't ditch the car for a 210. Anything but a 210 (or 203).
I will admit my W140 opinions are clouded by the fact that the first one I had (S320) I ended up basically scrapping as the amount of suspension work it needed was 3x the value of the car at just 130k miles and the second (a S500 with 1 owner and full Merc history) basically rusted away to nothing in about 1 year I owned it and I ended up flogging this 102k mile mechanically perfect example to some Polish bloke who was going to rip out the engine and crush the rest but, still, I can't agree because I've generally had more luck with 210s and 203s (crusty wheel arches aside) and I've generally preferred driving them as well. But you can't ditch the car for a 210. I just looked at this very pretty 540i but unfortunately it sounded a bit lumpy, has very short MOT, 4 ditch finders, a broken interior door handle and 6 former keeps and no history. I did not have enough brave pills with me to complete a purchase.

Speaking inebriately (probably not a real word) and as a former owner of a 209 and current owner of a 210, they're not as bad as the comments they receive, rust excepted.
My old 209 was one of the most reliable cars I've owned, apart from the high level brake light falling out (they all do that sir)
I love my 140. Driven to Cambridge and back this weekend and it's superb on motorways. Refinement on another level to the previous ones

Surely the UK isn't big enough to run far enough away from that?I just looked at this very pretty 540i but unfortunately it sounded a bit lumpy, has very short MOT, 4 ditch finders, a broken interior door handle and 6 former keeps and no history. Leggy and slightly tatty 545 Touring for £4500. A couple of minor advisories on the last MOT.

Indeed. I forgot to mention the coolant was below the minimum and the fans cut in straight away despite the engine being stone cold. But despite that it did look lovely - for an 18 year old car I couldn't fault the body work at all and at first glance no rust on the underside either. Shame that one turn of the key had the engine screaming MONEY PIT. Might be a decent buy for someone very handy with the spanners if you could get it cheap. I've seen another one up locally for 3k, sounds cleaner but I still get the feeling a 15 year old 540i is just an accident waiting to happen.
