It always reminds how the vast majority of cars are not a good way to spend money when I think how much used cars depreciate.

I've had a few cars but recently sold a 57 plate Audi S3 which I had for two years. Had a few owners, but still had the original invoice, £33000. I bought it at 5/6 years old for £10500.. (sold it for £9750)

I am currently driving a fully loaded 2004 mondeo tdci ghia. Only thing it doesn't have is leather and nav. List price new was £17000 11 years ago.... I paid £750 for it....

I know everyone buys a new car for x,y,z reason but I always find it funny to think someone paid X amount for this Y years ago and now its mine for a pitance!

The first owner had it brand spanking new, under warranty and with the peace of mind that brings. You had the car after it'd been subjected to 5 years of his flatulence, nose pickings and whatever else. You also probably don't have the same peace of mind associated with running a newer car. Some people care about these things and others don't.

I now fully understand why people choose a brand new Corsa over a 15 year old M5 despite being incredulous at the idea when I was a bit younger! Reason - I naively bought a c.£25k (in 2000) Impreza Turbo for £1900 in 2012 and then learned all about the running costs and hassle of older slightly interesting cars! Won't stop me buying another (better) Impreza though! smile

I had a 1999 Audi A8 4.2 that was about £50,000 new, it cost me £2750. It was absolutely fantastic. I've currently got an X308 Jaguar XJ8 that cost £1700, but I've no idea what they cost new. It's a 2001 car, and was sold against the E39, so was obviously considerably less than the A8 new, but I've no idea how much it actually cost.

Yes, £65000 M5's that can be had for 15k now are still 65k car part expensive!

My question though is out of interest who has what, I like a bargin! Although, a bargin can turn into a pit as you suggest.

I think it started with a six. First owner lost a pound a mile in depreciation alone...

If I remember right I think the original invoice for my Noble was £63k in 2004. I paid £27250 in 2011. It's gone up since then.

Never bought a brand new car privately but had plenty of new company ones. Most of my private cars have been expensive ones bought for little money. Current pair cost less than a new hatchback these days.

I think my '98 Jaguar XJR was somewhere in the £50k's when new.
It also has several extra bits like a Motorola phone, cupholders, and heated/adjustable seats that were undoubtedly ludicrously expensive for what they actually are.

I paid £1650 last month...

I got a focus ST3 in May @ 14 months old and 25k on the clock.

Paid £16.8k for it, the previous owner lost just short of £10k in that time.
