The 7-series boys have got me well and truly beaten, but my E46 328i cost £31,000 when it was new in 1999. I paid £1750 three and a half years ago.

My E36 is better value, that was about £27k new and cost me £900.

Eight years ago I bought a six month old 4500 mile Mercedes S65 with an invoice at new of £177k for £105k.. Still got it at 75,000 miles now worth about £25k. Depreciated approx £70k in first six months then a further £70k in next seven and a half years!! Bargain!!
How was it optioned up to that much!!!

My Q7 was just over £80k and i paid half that at three years old and with just 16k on the clock.
The base price was £155k but it also had useful features added like Night Vision (cannot see when you would use it as it is like driving in a video game) Fridge (that was a good one) massaging seats all round and top sound system ..... Soon adds up!!

The original owner of my Jag XJ paid £51k for it, I bought it from him at seven years old for £6750 with a full and very expensive Jag history, he even bought his tyres from the main dealer. I have the HP agreement - £48k over three years, the repayments were £1483 per month! Eye watering stuff. He also went to town on the options including spending £2.5k on the rear entertainment system which never got used as he didn't know how to work it. As you do... wobble

Trying to adjust for inflation and exchange rates - a 1991 Prelude INX would cost about 22,000 pounds now - all mine for 300.

Mind you, the travel to get (flight, bus and ferry) was about the same - as was a new set of tyres to replace the four slicks.

I worked with a lad that did something similar. If he'd had any kids I'm sure it would have been very useful...

The first owner had it brand spanking new, under warranty and with the peace of mind that brings. You had the car after it'd been subjected to 5 years of his flatulence, nose pickings and whatever else. You also probably don't have the same peace of mind associated with running a newer car. Some people care about these things and others don't.

I now fully understand why people choose a brand new Corsa over a 15 year old M5 despite being incredulous at the idea when I was a bit younger! Reason - I naively bought a c.£25k (in 2000) Impreza Turbo for £1900 in 2012 and then learned all about the running costs and hassle of older slightly interesting cars! Won't stop me buying another (better) Impreza though! smile
Tbf you bought a £1900 impreza turbo. It was never ever going to end well.

Audi R8 cost 100,000GBP new, 38,000GBP to me with 18,000miles and warranty.
Aston Martin DBS 170,000GBP new, 65,000GBP with 6,000 miles and 2yr AM warranty.

Good used cars are the way to go, let some other guy deal with the depreciation.

Not sure it is as much peace of mind as vanity and keeping up with the Jones.
Just look at how materialistic and obsessed with shallow meaningless celebrity folks are in this country.

You'll soon feel the pain and realise why they are cheaper seconds hand. Ours cost us £6k in 10 months to run. Injectors, inlet manifolds, sat nav all packed up. Miserable pieces of st. Couldn't wait to get rid.
But new and under warranty I wouldn't of been as upset. Surprised but not upset.

Big car money big money repair costs.

To illustrate how it works here in Germany: The car I drive at the moment cost €35640 in 2012. I bought it in 2013 with 12300KM on the clock for €21500. That's a loss of over 14000 in the first year eek
Volkswagens loss, my gain biglaugh
I'd never buy a brand new car here, but the one year old examples with low mileage ( what they call a Jahreswagen here ) are really very good value for money as the first owner has taken the wacking with depreciation, leaving the second owner with a bargain. What's not to like? hehe

Edited for fat fingers...

Bearded, double hard bd multiple company owning directors have everything new.
Quite the opposite!

This is PH and anyone who buys new is a mug who has bought a white good and can no longer claim to be an enthusiasts.

So say Bearded double hard bds who know everything about everything.

My £7000 '57 plate Citroen C6 (bought in 2013) was, with the options, just north of £40k when new (I think)
