Impressive technology as always with any new S Class product. Not sure with the looks though... Looks a bit A Class from the front-on view, and from certain angles looks like the E Class cabriolet.

I'm sure it will be a lot more impressive in the flesh. I'd still prefer an S65 AMG though, which, IMO is a better looking car!

From the photos, this does not look sufficiently grand, elegant or generally impressive enough for the S class name. This looks like a big E Class cabrio with nothing to really make it stand out. Ditto the current SL versus the previous generations. These current models look OK, but pretty uninspired, and uninspiring. The previous two generations of S Class coupe (badged the CL) have achieved the combination of elegance and implicit power better than this car. Neither was available as a cabrio, of course.

At well over 2 tonnes I'm surprised they didn't go for a folding tin top.

Looks lovely even so.

Really like it, first elegant Mercedes design for a while. They've really gone off the deep end recently with abominations like the GLE. I think this is the best since the mk1 CLS.

I must be the only one thinking the front end looks like a melted pig... And a Korean rear end (not necessarily bad, but not very Mercedes..)

Previous gen of all Mercedes for me thanks...

Totally agree. The front end of virtually all the current Benz range looks utterly awful.

I quite like this but at £110k list for the S500? and Im guessing £140k ish for the S63?
That is a lot of money for 'just' a Merc, open to a lot more stiff competition at those prices, especially used - Bentley GTC, DB9 Volate, Maserati GranCabrio etc.

Is it odd I'm not sure Id bother buying the 63 in this type of car? As its so big, and will most likely be used as a daily driver, or wafting to the south of france - would you want the 5.5 or is the S500 more than enough? Perhaps Im being boring....

Well, if big open top Mercs were good enough for Hitler and Goring then they're good enough for property investors. wink

I have been waiting for this car to come out since I bought a new M6 Cabrio in December 2013 and found how lacking the luxury element was. Cars like the Maserati that have been mentioned aren't even worth considering if you are looking for a luxury car, they are way more sports focussed and are no way near the luxury gt league. I didn't gel with the Bentley GTC personally, though I think a lot of that was I just couldn't stomach the image!, and the Rolls is just too pricey of course. I think it's a fantastic package and having really enjoyed the S-Class Coupe, I'm sure this cabrio version will absolutely have the luxury cabrio GT thing nailed.

But all that being said, whilst Mercedes might still mean something really special to the older generation, to those of us who grew up with cheap finance all over the place, and Mercedes becoming a volume manufacturer with lots of very attainable cars wearing that big old badge, is it possible to justify the 6-figure price tag - especially when we all know how these things are going to absolutely dive bomb in depreciation the second it's driven off the lot?

Get what you mean about luxury - I don't think the cabin justifies the price tag new for an M6 (used is another story) It can't dive bomb as much as a M6 cab though surely? But these will depreciate horrifically if the CL is anything to go by....

Have you tried a GTC V8 or W12 speed GTC? and the one you had/or drove how old was it?
I think at this level Bentley GTC, Rolls Phantom Drophead and S Class Cabriolet currently the only options.... soon to be joined by Mulsanne Convertible and Wraith Convertible (rising dawn?) but as you said possibly too ostentatious not to mention £220K plus price tags no doubt....
Have I missed any other options other than those 'sportier' GT cars?

Looks horrid. Interior is horrid also it doesn't flow. The outside is the same theres no cohesion to the design, looks like different departments styled the front, back and sides and then they put it together. Also why a 4 seat convertible? The SL is a far prettier and cohesive design and a cracking car to sit in. I was in MB in Berlin and sat in all the Merc models and the SL was by far at the nicest.

you are 100% right, the m6 cabin is not good enough, especially not at the laughable £100k 'list price'. To be honest I don't think anyone has ever paid that. I got a good £25k off, still 5-figure depreciation after 8 months!

The GTC was a 2015 V8, it was a good car, but I iust didn't feel right in it. Probably an image thing, not for me. Plus you want to talk depreciation... The list on that was £180k! But I'd have gone for a used one anyway, sub £100k. But in the end just preferred the new Range Rover, despite being a pretty different car type.

The choice is pretty limited for a 4 seater luxury cabrio, only really mega money options. Looking forward to seeing the Dawn, not to purchase, just to admire! Well compared to those, I guess the S cabrio looks good value... Where's that Mercedes dealer number.... wink

I love the SL cabin, especially in a lighter colour. Thought that the S coupe cabin was pretty awesome too though, ultra comfy seats!!

Remember fifth gear test on new FFRR, they deducted it wasn't too far off rolls royce phantom levels of comfort for 1/3 or so of the price! Very accomplished vehicles and the cabin is a nice place to sit - doesnt look quite as pretty as the bentleys interior though.

FFRR & GT interiors are equally as luxury to me - comfort, materials, etc. Though can certainly understand preferring Bentley styling, both very nice though. I do love the high seating position in the FFRR, so relaxing on the highway being able to see so far in front.

Tell you what though, the S63 coupe seat had them both beat for comfort! Love Merc's luxury seats - as Chris Harris put it ... "half racing bucket & half armchair"

With the CLA taking the cake, the rear end reminds me of a tube of paste that someone squeezed too hard

he new car is a "blinger" in comparison to the old one? The old car is understated? Really?? Do you actually know what the word "bling" truly means??? Your statement isn't correct if we go by the facts.

The old car has a LOT more chrome (which is what the "bling" is in this case) than the new one. The only chrome on the new one is in the grill at the front, the strip above the rear lights and and around the sill. In comparison, the old car has the entire front and rear bumpers, the headlight frames, the grill, the windshield surround, the wipers and the wheel covers/hub caps not to mention the two lines of chrome along the middle and the bottom of the flanks. Now THAT is a "crowd-pleasing blinger", the new car is actually the far more understated IMO.

Old:-

New:-
Why does bling = chrome? I think bling-y means something flashy, showy or ostentatious (which the new car is imho), rather than a measure of how much chrome it has. I don't dislike the new one, I just think its appeal is quite different from the old one, regardless of the age difference.
