No, the previous reply is worse because it shows the guy isn't paying any attention
We're going to have to differ on that. True it could show that the guy isn't paying attention, it could also show that he is paying attention but just not willing to change his course/speed to assist another driver whose planning may not be all that hot.

My example clearly shows a driver who is paying attention and is willing to drive to deliberately cause potential conflict and danger. In my book that's worse. If it's not in yours then so be it. Shrug.

it used to be tailgating was done primarily by people wanting to make progress and who had the skills and the performance to make progress. They'd tailgate you only for a short time before moving on.

Increasingly I'm getting tailgated by people who have no interest in overtaking. Thats just the way they drive. Sit 5m off the car in front of them and unable to keep a constant speed, brake lights coming on every 10 secs.
Serious question if you put on cruise control and maintain distance to x car lengths do brake lights automatically come on if the car slows itself to maintain the Gap? Could be modern tech is to blame for s lot of it.

Ditto basic cruise control they don't cancel it until the last minute hoping that you will regaing the speed he had -

Of course you may have people who have a relative who is seriously ill in hospital as such your going to get there PDQ and to hell with speed limits.

You could have some who are unable to control bowel movements so need to go quickly

I used to have a mk1 Golf GTi that had knackered valve guide seals, running around on light throttle it was ok but booting it left a blue cloud in it's wake. Tailgaters choked or backed off laugh.
Years ago I fitted a windscreen washer bottle filled with Redex under the bonnet. Pipe leading to air intake with a switch on the dash...worked every time!

Then wonder why your cars been keyed when you get in one day!]
Is that what you do ?
At the time I was driving a 14 year old Vitesse that cost me £70. Getting keyed was the least of my worries...

But let's say I set my car to 70mph and 2seconds gap whatever that equates to be and then leave it do its thing. The chap behind me might think I'm fking about on and off yet it's down to the chap in front of me or whoever is at the start of the queue.

What?

I'm saying fairly clearly that one part of the reason people see brake lights on and off all the time on he motorways is down to active cruise control. Most would even consider it to be down to that instead think the chap in front is playing silly buggers.

Isn't it a bit more swings and roundabouts than that? The cruise can only react when something enters the range of the detection system and then it depends on the setting. Whereas a decent driver can see an issue well ahead and be easing back , possibly even lifting off completely if it's downhill.

Though do agree it's better than someone with dodgy attention.

Maybe they are better now but the ones that I have tried the distance control has had to be set towards the top of the range to establish a proper following position. Middle settings are too close and short settings are full on tailgate.

Also things seemed a bit coarse. Imagine a line of traffic all spaced out. Vehicle in front moves right into a space. The Volvo system certainly went "whay hay - space" and issued a great gob of throttle. Only a couple of seconds later to go "whoa there" and brake. That imo gives the appearance of driving like a knob to those following.

That last sentence is exactly what I mean.

Thought I'd bump the thread with this, somewhat topical, made me chuckle:

The Daily Mash said:
Tailgater astonished to discover further car just 30 yards ahead

A TAILGATER on the fast lane of the M1 has been shocked to discover another car a short distance behind the one that was blocking him.

Day:

Use my brakes as little as possible, especially on upcoming tight corners which my car can handle with ease.

I must be getting old as I just don't get why that muppet stays in the outside lane......perhaps if we had a vid of a cop asking that question.....or are they just brain dead? Bit like utter assholes that put tiny sidelights on at dusk...............WHY?

Unfortunately the trouble comes when a tailgater doesn’t want to overtake, tailgating is just their style of driving.

Last week I was driving home around 11PM through an urban 30MPH limit, as it was late and practically deserted I was being a little optimistic with the limit but this doesn’t stop a Vauxhall Zafira behind me driving inches from my back bumper. I choose to ignore them as they continued to maintain their miniscule gap through the following 40MPH limit. Further up the road with them still glued to my bumper the road increases to the NSL, as do I. They’re still right behind me and with the absence of street lighting their headlights were dazzling me.

On a long straight with no one approaching I thought the sensible thing would be to let them past. I signal and move left, easing off the throttle, to which they react by slamming on their brakes opening up a huge gap between us. Thinking ‘WTF?’ I speed up to the limit and not long after they’re again stuck to my bumper. I couldn’t understand the mentality and by this point I was annoyed so dropped a number of gears and sodded off.

Dealing with tailgaters was much more fun in my A6 TDi when it had a substantial boost leak causing it to billow out thick, black smoke. Stamping on the gas would see them retreating very quickly, and left me laughing every time.

Accelerate to your vehicles top speed as fast as you can and see if they have the balls to keep up with you.
Tried that but after 120 I couldn't see them in the rear view, so no need to hit the rev limiter in top.

I might be mistaken....but isn't this what rear wash/wipers was invented for....

Quick spray normally results in a light covering of their screen and in most (unfortunately not all) cases the tailgater gets the message

Tailgaters. Or Evoque drivers as they're otherwise known.

I'm more interested in in what's in front, not driving for some stressed out bell end behind me. Ignore 'em.
