you don't need to tailgate, just approach fast and back off, repeating if necessary.

I used to have a mk1 Golf GTi that had knackered valve guide seals, running around on light throttle it was ok but booting it left a blue cloud in it's wake. Tailgaters choked or backed off laugh.
My old 306 Dturbo used to do something similar. Hold the handbrake on slightly and maintain your speed with the throttle. Black plumes of smoke hahaha.

On the topic, I just let them go these days. Far too many psychos out there.

He didn't want to keep up on the twisty NSL roads for some reason. Spoilsport!
Some years ago but I had the same in an Integra Type-R with a Range Rover following me through the puddled roads of Chertsey.
After a bit too much tail-gaiting, I went into a corner with only a bit of engine braking beforehand, around 45mph, and the Range Rover followed me at similar speeds. Only one of us made it round the corner. yikes Just to add, this wasn't an answer to the question of the thread - sensible solution as said before is to make sure you have a safe gap in front of you to allow for the idiot behind, and hope they pass you when it's safe to do so.

rofl Did you stop to help?

A similar thing happened to me in my S2000, a chap in an old Astra doing his utmost to keep up with me on a country road, whilst I was pootling along (it had been raining so I wasn't rushing anywhere), I took a reasonably sharp corner pretty quickly and he followed at the same speed, he lost control and bounced the car off of the wall at the side of the road and ground to a halt after scraping his drivers side down the wall for fifty yards or so.

I didn't bother stopping to help.

There is never a good reason to tailgate, anywhere, ever.

If you think it is bad here you need to go to Italy where it seems to be a national disease.

But in our case it was the car that became fed up with these little willie hatchbacks two inches from the bumper.

A well known fault with the early Aston Virage is for the vacuum pipes to fail with age and thus give false information to the MAP sensor. Ours failed on the Autostrada and sent the message for full fuel to the injectors. This changed the fuel consumption readout from over 20 mpg to less than 5 mpg and a massive cloud of smoke from the exhausts meant that the "baddies" disappeared in true Bond fashion.

The downside was eventual flooding, the engine stalled and we came to an ignominious halt on the hard shoulder.

Lane discipline is shocking on UK motorways. In addition, there are too many self appointed '70 is a limit not a target' type road police who will lane block and prevent anyone from going faster.

I'd say a decent proportion of those who are victims of tailgating deserve it.

That would make sense if tailgating was some kind of solution, but it isn't, the lane is still blocked however close you are to the vehicle in front. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Better the enemy in front than behind, let someone else be involved in their accident. Unfortunately this reinforces their experience that tailgating is beneficial to their progress.

Must confess that once in one of those 40s where the limit is just stupid one may have assisted an overtake right into the jaws of the camera van on the next straight. Not nice I know but feck 'em.

On a motorway - i let them pass. I'd rather not have a retard in a 2 ton death missile on my back bumper.

On other roads, if theres opportunity to let them pass i'll pull over a bit and let them overtake, otherwise i ignore.
Finally a common sense answer with sound advise on the correct thing to do, not the egotistical asshole options most are providing.

You seem to be assuming that none of the previous answers were taking the piss.

I find windscreen washers and a show of brake lights usually puts them back bit. Some people just drive close to you for no reason... my brothers one of those people drives me and my dad mad.

I let them by don't waste stress anger and don't want to be involved with any accident they might cause.

More often than not I catch them up with traffic which is amusing. Rarely I catch them at traffic lights and we are side by side - I leave him standing (depending on what vehicle he has)

just get out of the way and let them get on with it
they are faster than you
move over
it only takes 3 seconds to let someone past
let them harass the next person and get on with your life
The problem with this is, in many instances (and this isnt a criticism of your post) is that if you move over as soon as safe & practicable, the tailgater will pass at 0.5mph above your speed and the many cars who are all tailgating behind don't let you back out to overtake the next car you approach. This is part the reason why you see so many people not moving left after an overtake. Due to the queue of moronic lemmings behind, if one pulls over to lane one, realistically you will have to slow down and wait for them all to pass.

Driving standards are st these days.

Those that try and keep to a decent standard and are considerate are getting fewer and fewer and I think to an extent many think, sod it, why should I bother when most others dont.

Tailgaters annoy me purely because of how unsafe they are.

Not necessarily the solitary act of the "tailgate" itself, but because those drivers often a) don't pay a jot of attention to the road/their driving and so just lock on to the car in front and react to what the car in front is doing; and/or b) possess near fk-all driving ability (read: the vast majority of under 20 males) and think that's how you drive "quick".

You wont get there any quicker if you're .2 seconds away from the car in front versus 2-3 seconds away.

This. I think you're right about the yoof boot suckers, the grown up ones just don't think about the pros and cons of tailgating, they're just on auto pilot. Morons all.

Years ago I fitted a windscreen washer bottle filled with Redex under the bonnet. Pipe leading to air intake with a switch on the dash...worked every time!
