So I took the RS6 to where it feels home today, namely a run from Southampton via M27, M3, A34, M4 & M5 to my office in Bristol.

Was an effortless drive with the occasional blast to remind myself what I was driving. 25.8mpg.

However I'm fairly sure any exec car would do the journey equally as effortlessly and certainly didn't need 700 ponies to make the trip!

Will see how tomorrows exige drive goes!

Don't discount the s2 exige either.

Dave, I live in your area (near Fareham) and I'm an accountant. Guess we're just winners in the lottery of life eh?!
Anyway, I think the main problem round here is the roads/traffic. There really is almost nowhere local that is free of busy traffic, speed cameras, low speed limits etc. etc. My solution? I bought a Monaro, and just pootle around listening to the V8 feeling smug, but in a slow and relaxed way. Well, smug until it needs refuelling (18 mpg average, oh well). Hope you find the answer soon!
Mike.

Hi Mike, you're right the traffic round here is worst of all places I've lived (Aberdeen, North West London, Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth & Plymouth!)

I'm just by Jn8 so 'your' side of Southampton. Thought long and hard about a monaro too. If you're free at some point I wouldn't mind having a poke around yours, promise not to talk shop!

I have a similar problem. I Bought an immaculate R171 SLK55 and upgraded it with remap, Kleemann cams and exhaust headers..Consequently it now puts out about 420bhp.

The challenge is (like you) I never get to enjoy the power for more than a few seconds at a time.

I think the real problem is the roads- I live in West London and consequently most of the time am just crawling along in traffic. I bought a 2008 polo bluemotion last November as a snotter and have actually done more miles in that (4.5k) than the slk (2k).If I lived somewhere where I had derestricted autobahns that I could really stretch it's legs it would probably be different but it's easier often to grab the keys to the polo.

It saddens me to say that as I love fast cars but in this day and age with the sheer volume of traffic it seems increasingly irrelevant

So what about the S4 then. More frugal, and still fairly rapid, in that you can still rag it without ever getting to warp speed. smile

Yup, that man has wise words.

Have seriously considered the 147 for this week, see how I get on and I really DO try to turn accountant brain off. It's a great thing that has afforded me nice cars but it's also the destroyer of enjoyment in said cars!

Think a couple of PH stickers over the trip computer and fuel gauge will cure the problem wink
Then you have to think, why the hell have I got an RS6 for the weekend? OP I think this is the wrong car for you - this car is a classic case of "more is not always better" and you realise that - you haven't bought into the marketing.

Did you consider something left field, like the Alfa for daily and a Lotus (Decent V6 one) or equivalent for weekend?

Agree wholeheartedly. I'm just about to build a racing cockpit in my mancave with a high quality wheel and pedals and run project cars, rFactor etc to get my daily speed thrills. Total build will be about £5-600 but then it'll pay for itself in no time as I'll probably use it most nights. I loved the immersiveness of the set up at 'the race centre' at Chandlers ford.

The realisation is dawning! Wednesday I popped into my local lotus/lexus/toyota dealer and have booked a test drive in an exige this weekend. Depending on how I get on I've then got the option to take an evora out for a spin.

I really do want to love this car, but instead I think I like it a lot when it's warping space time and really don't like it at all in traffic!

Yeah I did think about the S4 with the revo tuning to take it to 400bhp - still not wholly discounted it but the one I sat in was a poverty spec special and was all round tatty to boot. That and I've always preferred the A6 interior and space to A4.... and I keep seeing full fat RS4's on the road!

Buying another Audi is the last thing you should do.

Enjoy the Lotus test drive today!

As a slightly biased owner I'd say you are on the right track. Monaros are rare beasts and good ones are getting rarer. I've had mine for 10 years and no plans to swap it. Pop over to the HSV and Monaro forum for a friendly welcome and advice. There are quite a few owners in your area who'd love to take you for a spin. XPuffin has a 7.0 twin turbo monster pushing out 1000hp which might be of interest! smile

I have to say I don't really see the appeal in fast family/practical cars. Jack of all, master of none.

It's fun having good acceleration on tap no matter where you are or how loaded up the car is. smile Holidays to the continent is where I enjoy them most - potential for twisty motorways and scope for a bit of fun on solo drives when you're there.

Or, simply use them as a tool to make the kids go, "Weeeeeee!"

I think the real problem is that there is no such thing as the perfect car.inevitably as we all get older, get a bit more cash and some of us have kids it becomes more about compromise. As another poster mentioned it's easy to end up in a 'jack of all trades, master of none scenario'.

One of the most fun cars I owned was a remapped smart brabus for two which would top out at 118. It was one of the few cars I would actually just go out in for a drive. I also went to autoitalia with a friend in his immaculate X1/9. Doing 50 in that felt like doing 90!!.. its only used at weekends and on short (ish) joutneys (as any x1/9 owner can attest, sat at 70mph for a couple of hours means you end up going deaf!).

maybe in this day and age of increased congestion and average speed cameras it's a matter of having different cars for different tasks.

I enjoy jumping in the polo for trips to the shops and the more mundane stuff (especially the 70+mpg and virtually zero running costs!)whilst keeping the slk for high days and holidays..that way I get to appreciate it more

Which is precisely the joy of a proper mid-engined chassis, however modest the car. It's no accident that Elise/Exige, MR2 and Boxster/Cayman are so highly regarded.

As I said earlier, the RS6 is a second or third car for people who really don't need to worry about money at all.

Dave, do you remember this from Mustang-news thread?

You said:
"I was all geared up to buy one of these. Had the cash ready and all I wanted to do was have a poke around one. Put my name down with Ford Eastleigh, nothing from them yet.

At Goodwood I was expecting there to be at least a couple of these to have a poke around in but no, just the one that was cordoned off with railings 5ft away from it and someone keeping an eye on the car at all times.

When asked why I couldn't even peer through the window to see if my daughter would stand a chance of fitting in the back all I got was "sorry, no ones allowed near it, Ford UK won't allow anyone to get close to one until the RHD ones are available.

Wandered over to the shelby stall (who had THREE mustangs!) and told them about the Ford stall. Guy immediately got the keys to his LHD mustang and let me have a look around it.

Emailed ford uk to ask why such a poor show, especially considering Shelby were so accommodating and got nothing in reply.

So my money went on a used RS6 instead. very different cars but my only constraint was it had to be a V8 or bigger, modern with toys and fast!"

I did say:
"Not a good move my friend...."

smile I was right, and that was maybe my first time like ever biggrin A lot of hp doesn't mean that car is exiting to drive, so i would change that audi away. Actually i would stay away from all models from Audi. What about that Mustang which you have thought earlier?

You did indeed sir. Maximum win for you today :P

Still stand by my point that ford customer service shoukd have been better.

Anywho took a supercharged exige it today. What a car. The sakes guy took it out first with me as passenger and the way it took corners at impossible speeds was amazing, combined with ťhe engine right by your ear and the supercharger whine made for an immersive experience.

I have much now to think about. Maybe octahedral visit estate as daily and else or exige as a weekend car.... Hmmm

Either way jumping back into the RS6 felt numb after the exige even if it does do fast very quick.
