Had two RS's and driven many other RS's and I've fallen out of love with them, sure they are capable and quick but they are utterly soulless motors.

I had the V10 M5 and think that lump is better than the C6 V10. It's much more involving to drive thanks to RWD and electronic diff.

I'm now a Maserati man and just love the brand and image. You thought about a GranSport or GranTurismo?

It's a nice looking car but if I was buying an RS6 I'd want it in the lighter blue color - it looks a bit boring in navy blue. All IMHO of course, I drive a silver BMW so what would I know hehe

Edit - that's not a criticism.

guilty hehe

So what's the new plan? Or are you waiting to see what the Audi goes for before you make your mind up?

The second. Really liked the drive in the exige but I do wonder whether it was just the first time in a car like that and I should try new things before committing. As an earlier poster said perhaps I should try a porsche, I've been avoiding it but I should at least try it. Been ten plus years since I drove a 996 turbo!

Try a Cayman S, I was on the cusp of buying one until my circumstances changed and I am not in the UK enough to justify it now.

Aside from the Evo Wagon I also run a Clio Sport 182 Cup..... now if you haven't tried one of these little pocket rockets then you must do! They are cheap as chips and is pretty much one of the most involving cars I've ever driven. Brilliant at road speeds, really agile and the lift-off oversteer is hilarious. Honestly, for a few £k its worth it just for the experience. I tracked mine for the first time last Friday at Hullavington and was amazed to find that it was even fun on track! A really lovable little thug of a car. If you can stretch a few more £k for a Trophy then you will probably make money as they seem to be appreciating, no doubt helped by their Evo mag cult status.

No major interest in the car just yet but have done another 500 miles in the car since the thread was started.

Warming a bit more to it, I've found switching the car to flappy paddle mode makes it a bit more engaging and allows me to bring out some more of the engine sound at acceptable speeds!

Having read some other posts where people with Golf R's are only getting low 20's as an average it puts a whole new perspective on my 19.4mpg average since buying the car! Certainly know which car I'd rather be sat in given the choice of mine or one of the latest breed of hot hatches that are (slightly) slower, just as unengaging from some peoples reviews and barely any more economical!

Keep thinking about the exige though, was a great drive....

I really think you should be looking at alternative modes of transport to work. Its 3 miles, I can run that in my half hour lunch. Cycle/walk/run to work. Sitting in traffic is st and makes any car rubbish. Just use the car for longer journeys.

Per earlier posts I have a bike which I'm going to ride as soon as shower and suitable place to lock it up is sorted. Shower is sorted and now I need to get a bike rack installed, then at least two days a week I can cycle (the other days I have to drop my four year old daughter at school which is in the other direction!)

So I'm on it!

I used to also run 5 miles each way to work in about 40 mins but after a nasty twist I split a disc which leaked into my spinal column. 15 months later I ended up having a partial discectomy and highly recommended never to run again. So there's a bloody good reason I drive more often than not, it's not laziness!!!

I'm a diehard rwd fan, but the 172/182 is an itch I have. Great chassis and pure fun.
Strangely I see it as similar to the mx5 in that it tests whether you're a petrolhead or badge snob.
How many great cars are overlooked because of badge/small size?

Yeah it was the worst pain I've ever experienced. NHS insisted it was trapped nerve. Only after a year did I get promoted and get private medical. Got referred and within three days I was under the knife! Tramadol, diazapam, oromorph. None remotely touched the pain!

Anywho.

For the time being I've set myself up with this :

Thrustmaster t300 hooked up to a pc and ps4 for project cars and rfactor

I also have a 172 and my commute is a massive 2 miles!

The clio warms up in no time and I get around 30mpg on my 2 mile commute , on top of that it's a fun little car for just bombing around in.

Was taken for a spin in a new S3 recently, the driver really enthused about his car but it didn't feel fast, the engine sound was strange, looked nice inside but left me feeling meh.

For what its worth, I run a Golf R as a spare and am seeing about 30mpg average... I did see 38mpg recently on sedate (congested) motorway running which was impressive... but a 'brisk' run over several hundred miles is about 29mpg and for comparison the M5 with 2.5x the displacement and near enough 2x the power is about 22mpg

That thought will never go away, you'll likely end up back in something more raw in the not too distant future...

Good to know, thanks. Was flirting with the idea of a mid sized car. Was very impressed with the M135i I drove and even liked it being ugly in a weird sort of way as I knew it'd be a talking point and marmite to people, either love or hate! Didn't buy because I didn't want the burden of owing money on a car (not been like that for a while!) and thought I'd miss the extra space of a hoofing great estate!

I think you're right there. Part of me wants to keep the RS6 AND get an exige but that's far too many toys I could feasibly justify right now! Would have to drop to a tdi-ous D segment estate and have the exige for high days and dry days.

What stops you getting a sensible estate (A4 estate or Passat) and then a toy? The small trips wouldn't be bad for a 2.0 petrol or 1.8 turbo. Diesel wouldn't work well ...

Nothing really, save for actually selling the RS6!
