I'm not sure where to post this, but here goes...

I was standing in the garden of my house a few minutes ago, when I heard a series of rumbling noises, which I initially thought was thunder. Shortly after, the noise became more distinct - like a series of plopping bangs.

At first this was not so dissimilar to the sound made by rolling a very heavily laden wheelie bin over uneven paving stones with gaps between them.

Shortly afterwards a modern Jet passenger aircraft flew overhead at a fairly standard low-ish height to approach Manchester airport. The popping bang noise occurred about twice per second - and was really quite loud and thunderous - and definitely coming from the aircraft. Hopefully, all will turn out well for it. It did seem to be flying normally - but for the noise and being nearer to the house than usual, there was nothing concering or unusual about its appearance. I found it disconcerting though.

What would cause this?

It did sound very much like that - but louder (though that could just be the video) - and slightly less regular. It is about the same speed though.

There is another thread in NP&E - I should have poster there, but I never think of using the section!

Plane with an engine on fire / smoking flown over head into Manchester Airport #manchesterairport #MEN

Just seen a JET2 plane flying over oldham with banging sounds coming from the engines #manchesterairport #jet2com

  1. Jet2 737 has landed ok, was still backfiring on second approach to #ManchesterAirport

Jet2 737 on approach to #ManchesterAirport had loud noises coming from the engines. Seemed to be backfiring, seems to have gone around.

I have a mate who flies 737s for Jet2 but I don't suppose it's him. He and I used to race our Moggie 1000s sideways around town back in 1974 but I'm sure he's gone all sensible and Captain-like now.

Yeah I heard that - at first I thought it was fireworks then heard the plane engines.

A flash thought was I wonder if it was about to crash; glad its OK
