A friend of mine received a cheque for $17k for his 4 year old 120k mile golf from VW. He was very happy with the outcome.
They're supposed to be using values as if unaffected - I know used car prices in the US can seem bonkers, but surely that's very high?

R.I.P Diesel

You were just getting good, but dieselgate, petrol and abnormally high NOx and pollution levels killed you off.
Plenty of life left yet, and it is 2017 already.
Is it? Diesel is being either banned or taxed out of countries as we speak, but it could still last a bit longer
Well the latest technology is pretty good at reducing NOx levels, it will be around for many years yet.

When the Minister for Transport makes comments like this you can bet the days for diesels are numbered, not going yet but expect financial penalties for taking them into towns and cities, once you make diesels the same price to run as petrols people wont buy them

It will be many years before diesel is phased out, so we can continue to enjoy them for the time being.

I think it included $6k restitution. He did end up buying a new Golf estate but the $17k wasn't influenced by that. I do know that the diesel golf cost about $6k extra when compared to the petrol one. He only bought it because he knew he was going to be doing high miles. Otherwise the extra $6k purchase price wouldn't make sense.

That's the kind of amount I feel they should be giving to owners here but they're still being completely hard-faced about it.

But isn't it likely that they'll immediately make it a good deal more expensive to run a diesel over the next few years?

'We didn't know anything guv, honestly.'

I don't know what is worse. The cheating or the lies about the cheating process.

I really, really think it's all done now and don't understand why it keeps making news.

Americans only care because it's the opportunity to get free money.

Autocar just tested one of the fixed cars and found that, contrary to VW's claims, it was worse afterwards: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/autoca...

So why are autocar et al only just getting round to testing 'fixed' cars - Seat have been reminding me to get the fix done for several months now...

It's also notable that VW say 99% of those who've had the fix done are happy, but don't say what percentage have had the fix done.

Must be sharing the same management as Haymarket.

The only news here is by how much. If it wasn't going to perform worse VW needn't have cheated in the first place.

Oliver Schmidt pleads guilty (no surprise) in the US likely sentenced to 34months federal prison time (will serve ~80%/2 years)

This is the guy who returned to Florida for a holiday...

^^ So is this 'engineer' a sacrificial cow?

It's been interesting to watch details of the Samsung trial where, apparently, most of the family-bound executives have some form of conviction against them. It's almost seen as a rite of passage. I wonder what will happen to VAG's senior management; minus the family aspect...

He must have been really dumb to think he could just waltz into the states and have a holiday with no hassle. The US have made an example of VW to deter others from ever doing any cheating. The engineer who was just sentenced is caught up in the eye of the storm as well. Seems even over there being a drug pusher gets treated less harshly than a man like this guy.
