New german article at Handelsblatt has some insight on the methods the technicians used to manipulate the CO2 emissions.

According to this article they mixed diesel to the engine oil to lower the viscosity of the oil (temporarily reducing friction and thus decreasing fuel consumption) and inflated tires to 3,5 bar for the tests. Their superiors knew none of this. biggrin

IMO if this new device they came up with does anything, then it's because it functions as a Venturi that restricts the airflow.
It's also dirt cheap (< £1) and in a very convenient location for the retrofit.

Restricted airflow = richer combustion = lower NOx

Of course most if not all of the effect is from the ECU remapping, not this little part. I had a tendency to defend VAG through this scandal but now I also hope that the EPA hits them where it hurts the most.

'Volkswagen may be willing to recall vehicles affected by its emissions cheating scandal, but that doesn't mean that it's being entirely cooperative with investigators. Attorney general offices in multiple American states report that VW is refusing to hand over documents covering executives' communications -- that would violate German privacy laws"

Bye Bye VW...
I'm not surprised about that behaviour, this is looking less like a "scandal" and more like an economic war every week, IMO.

Looks to me like VAG's partnership with Katar is coming back to bite them. frown
