Nicely write article, shame about the car imo. It was called 220 for a reason and never even made that speed. It also didn't do them justice by making it RWD and ditching the V12. IIRC they had get a few lawsuits in the States over the car not being able to make 220mph. Never liked the rear styling, it just didn't go with the beautiful crafted front. The rear lights and grill between it makes it look unfinished.
also noticed the heater switches and vents are from the mk5 Ford Escort
Took the cats off for the top speed run at nardo, 217 mph iirc. Maybe they tweaked the boost as well. Chris Harris also mentioned they removed the cats from the mclaren f1 that autocar tested, which is intriguing, for a NA engine. also noticed the heater switches and vents are from the mk5 Ford Escort

not that its relevant but I have a house near there. An last time I went to that pub there was a RR Phantom outside. Not to give the location etc away but its not an area I associate with great wealth but you see loads of really nice cars round that way/pSyCoSiS said:
That is an epic car and one of my all time greats.
I remember when the official stats were released back in the early nineties, and it blew pretty much everything out of the way.

..and I must admit, I've always borne a grudge against the Macca F1 for coming along and stealing the Jag's thunder. (beside's the F1 is way overhyped IMHO)

Having said that, I don't it looks as dramatic or wild as the 220.
Great article and thanks for offering some perspective on this great car. Like many here, I always hankered after one and was lucky enough to acquire one 4 years ago.
To answer some questions posted above:
The styling at the rear is all about downforce. The car is capable of running with 1400KG of downforce in race trim. In road trim, it runs with 600KG. To put that in perspective, it's identical to the downforce generated by a P1.
The 6 air vents inside the car are absolutely necessary as, although it's hard to see, the roof is actually smoked glass, so although you get a wonderful 'open cockpit' feel in the car, it gets a lot of solar gain. The air-con is a must on a sunny day and works perfectly. I don't know the origin of the vents, but they are the same as the ones McLaren used on the F1.
Have so far covered 10,000 miles in mine and looking forward to many more.

Just did a search......the car was auctioned for £105k
11 miles on clock
Unregistered.
Yep, back in 2003 when nice cars were still unbelievably cheap. Same year, RM sold a Miura P400S for £90k. If only...11 miles on clock
Unregistered.

Oh, and for what it's worth, to those saying it failed to make 220mph, it did 217mph on the Nardo bowl. If taken to a suitably long straight like Ehra-Lessien I've no doubt it'd be right up there with the McLaren F1 in the 240-plus bracket... if the front end didn't lift off! I think I might want the 'S' spec front splitter...
