The V10 makes a rather anodyne noise compared to the full-blooded howl of the Giotto Bizzarrini V12. The Aventador, unfortunately, also now has an Audi-designed engine, instead of the proper Lamborghini one.

Always liked V10 noise ; IIRC nobody had done one until the 89 Honda F1 engine which was certainly the first one I heard 'live' . And it didn't disappoint- lovely hollow howl.

Alfa Romeo built an F1 V10 in 1986.

Nearly right - it was never fitted in an F1 car but in the 164 Procar

I have mine already - either this (original Caterham Superlight):

Or this (modified Lotus Elise S1 S160):

164 Procar was basically an F1 engine, a showcase for AR as an F1 engine supplier.

When did Dodge first stretch their V8 to ten cylinders?

I think the OP is still being misread, but I think you hit mine with one of your first suggestions - Carrera GT.

Still looks stunning today, and the noise and performance are still phenomenal. I think it would take me the rest of my life to learn how to drive it to its limit, and that would be fun!

Apart from that it would be something classic, either Porsche 356 or the Corvette Stingray with the split rear window, don't know model designations but it's from around 1963, and to my eyes is stunning.

Audi RS6 Avant, in a dream world would be manual but would settle for an automatic biggrin

Would be gray, with black leather, and light wood inlays. Not that I have thought about it. Much.

The one car that I would keep for life to remind me why I love driving is my little Elise. Others will replace the daily and the family car but the Elise stays, well until I am too old and un-flexible enough to get in.

For me it would be a z car mini, busa or vtec not bothered which. Very nearly bought a busa powered one 2 years ago. Test drive almost broke my neck and may have ruined a pair of pants but my god I loved it..

I long loved the shape of the W124 Mercedes E-class. It's so classy and from the end of the period when Mercedes built cars to a standard rather than a price.

If, like the car pictured, it had a Brabus 7.3 litre V12 under the bonnet I can't see that I'd ever need another car.

that in estate form would be perfect. although the engine must weigh a tonne so handling must be interesting to say the least.

No heavier than the 300TD engine.

This is also rather awesome.

quick google suggests a 300td is circa 260kg dresses vs 340kg for the v12.

aren't these based on the same era sl chassis, so presumably you could swap in the engine front suspension from the sl73? that should help some.

This from MBworld forum:

Just for the interest of anyone else looking for such information, today we finally reassembled our M120 minus the intake and exhaust manifolds and it weighed in at 239KG or 527lb. That includes alternator, starter motor, aircon pump etc etc, that is obviously minus oil etc.

The factory intake manifold is 17.5KG, but I don't have a weight for the exhaust manifolds, but they are quite heavy so I'd say at least another 15-20KG for those also.....
So, about 275kg. I've also seen 290kg quoted elsewhere. Some American weighed his and (estimating the weight of his engine hoist) calculated 654lb, which is 296.6kg. It's a big engine, of course - four camshafts, 48 valves and all...

Car for life (as well as other cars) or one car for life?
The former is easy. My Corvette. Best part of 3 years i have had it now, which is very rare for me. I change cars very very often. Reasons?

It's not losing any money.
Very powerful yet very light, 505 bhp stock but the same weight as a Golf GTI.
Enough luxury without masses of added weight.
Glorious iconic pushrod V8 sound.
Great handling.
198 mph top speed as standard.
Fast as hell when revved out yet still very quick at half revs.
Great looking from most angles.
Cheap to repair and service compared to other cars with 500+ bhp as standard.
Almost 30 mpg on a run.
You don't see them on the roads of the UK, well hardly ever.
Tuning is easy and on standard internals, a basic supercharger/cooling kit/map gives 750-900 bhp depending how mad/brave you are.
LHD only is the reason they don't fetch way more money.

Which cars today will age well in 20 and 40 years

20 years things like the 993 911s will be proper classics

E46 M3s will age well too

The age of turbo is just upon us , the EV only just beginning..while we mourn the boredom of turbos it will be nothing compared with EVs.

In 10 years the turbo will be views as exciting, the next M4 or maybe one after will be a hybrid I reckon look at i8...and then soon full EV

So in 20 years there will be no petrol or diesel cars on sale

Cars considered great today will I think rise in value think 911s caymans M3s esp those pre turbo

Why? EVs will be so fast all the petrol cars will be slow in comparison, and will be sought after for the noise and feel of power building through revs

But you will want a fairly big manufacturer as will get harder to source parts as these cars we enjoy today are highly complex and the pinnacle of a technology

So I would get something that will not be too rare and certainly made by a big car manufacturer that will adapt - bmw looks like it will, but my choice of car for this would be a 993 or maybe a 9997 gts as an everyday car or e92 m3 for a more practical option.

997 gt3 the better investment option

But....any of these cars will need to be essentially garage queens, on a 40 year horizon you have to have pretty limited mileage

One car for life is tougher. M5 V8 4.4 would be a good all-rounder choice.
S2000 if you don't need space.
Any of the premium hottest hatches.

I had a thread like this a couple of years ago, my answer then was a RS6, and a couple of year on the only possible other option would be a E63. but both cars similar vein. practical, roomy, comfortable and fast.
