For me the keeper is a Monza

Currently I own 2 1/2 of them but hopefully I'll eventually whittle it down to just one

Lots of other cars will come and go I'm sure but a Monza well that's a car for life

Relatively simple tastes for me - I'll keep my Z4C thanks!

Used to love Ferraris of all sorts but if I had one now I couldn't bring myself to park it out of sight, and the ones I always wanted were crazy fast so pretty much useless most of the time unless on a track day with fellow PHers of course!

As a kid I always wanted an E-type Coupe (like that red Corgi model back in the day!) but my Z4 has similar lines, does it mostly better, is significantly quicker and is about one-fifth of the price.

And if I can chop and change something else it is definitely a keeper, unless a Z4MC suddenly becomes affordable!

I've always loved the idea of buying a car brand new and keeping it 'forever', but there had never been anything that I would consider doing it with. However, I really, really love the look of the new Mustang GT and if in a few years time things work out as planned, I might put my money where my mouth is. cloud9

Other than that, a Monaro VXR is something that I'm aiming for relatively soon, and I suspect that when I do get one it'll be here for a very long time. Academic until I move as I'd be loathe to leave it parked on the street around here, and it wouldn't fit in my garage frown

If I had to live with one car for the rest of my life?

Best all-rounder ever made. Manual, naturally-aspirated, a relaxed 231bhp in stock form, quick enough for most of the time.

But thinking about it more ..probably a really well restored Elan Sprint dhc. There has never been a better looking small sports car, the packaging is a masterpiece and they are so much fun to drive .
Has been top of my list since I was 7...

Though that red E28 M5 from the first page of the thread would be sought out too...

Looked amazing when new, still look amazing now and IMO will only age even better!

Not wanting to cause offence but that's always the problem with looks (the beauty is in the eye of the beholder) that car has never looked anything other than gawky to me - none of the lines work for me and it just looks fugly - in fact the only car I actually drop into the same group is the bug eyed Ford Scorpio (although that's probably not a great comparision...........)

I'll concede that the from this inside the outside doesn't mater and the driving experience is probably excellent

Well, it is a car I love, and which is a joy to drive. OK, neither of my E39s is a 530i but I think it's probably the sweet spot in the range. They're refined cruisers, ride pretty nicely, they're big and tough, but show them a gnarly B-road and they just come alive... which is probably why even the little 520i only gets 26mpg average... they love being driven HARD.

Oh I don't have a problem with your choice - the question was what would be your one car for life - you can have others - just what would be your keeper for the whole time. We've done the one car and one only care for life many times before and estates often feature high up the list...

The thing is, I'm now at the stage of life that I view even my old sheds as keepers, I'd rather blow 30 grand on restoring my 520i than buying a new one.

Now, if I had stupid money to blow on one big toy, it'd probably be this...

But I'd settle for this, especially if it had the full-fat 6.75 rather than the twin-turbo BMW M62B44.

If I could have both I'd be even more chuffed.

M3 bodykit with Alpina engine? Mmm. Is it N/A or turbo?

They're N/A, using the 535i's "M30" 3.5L 12v I6, but tuned to 260hp. Alpina produced 62 of them

They also produced a very similar "B6 3.5" using the standard E30 bodyshell, but it's the M3-based one that really does it for me

Did Alpina or any of the other tuners around at that time (e.g. Hartge) ever put a 24v M88 into an E30? Wonder what it's like with that weight of iron up the front...

Don't know, but IIRC Hartge did put a 5 litre V8 into a 1 Series - with the benefit of hindsight that may be my "one car for life"! biglaugh

Its the equivalent of a first girlfriend. The others have been and gone - the exotica, the expensive ones, the way out of reach ones, but the first is always kinda special. It came out just at the right time in my life, and for me nothing since has made a big a step forward in the world of cars. Add to that the noise it makes, and the pedigree (which, lets face it, is still being heavily relied on today by Audi) then it is an easy choice for my one-and-only.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't say no to an MTM RS6 Avant with 802bhp (and somebody else paying tax and fuel) but it just doesn't have the soul.
