Who cares about a trailer in the outside lane in crawling traffic (other than possibly the police?)

Get over it and put that phone away, I and I imagine many other people here would have more of a problem with a driver using a phone while driving than I do with the trailer driver.

Hypocrite.

As you pass the M6 the M62 goes down to two lanes. One of the slip road lanes from the joining M6 then becomes the new inside lane. Vehicles that were legally in the outside lane of the two lane section are then illegally in the third lane, and in heavy traffic may not be able to move over immediately.
Is this what has happened here?

As I sometimes tow a trailer I find it frustrating that the majority of MLM have no idea that trailers aren't allowed in the outside lane.

I may have occassionally used it to get past the odd MLM doing 50 who refused to move over to the inside lane.

I've seen others towing jet skis etc hooning along at 80+ in the outside lane for miles, clearly unaware that they shouldn't be there.
I've had problems with middle-lane hoggers when towing also. The worst was a woman driving at 48mph in the middle-lane of an empty motorway. I flashed my lights, beeped my horn but she ignored me completely (chatting to her friend), in the end I used the 3rd lane to pass her.
The other problem can be when you are in the outside lane of a busy 2-lane motorway when it turns to 3-lane, it can take some time to get back into the middle lane - especially if the traffic is moving slowly and bunched up tight.

Ah, this'll be one of those threads that didn't go quite the the way the OP expected smile

As has been pointed out, you appear to be taking photos whilst driving a car. Putting the legality of it to one side, who's more likely to have an accident, the van & trailer crawling along in lane three, or the chap in the car in lane one concentrating on taking photos on his phone rather than the road in front of him?

My money wouldn't be on the van driver.

If you are so incensed about this guy, why didn't you ring up the firm he works for (clue: its plastered all over the van) and have a whinge at them instead of coming on here and telling us?

No doubt you'll read all of these replies and probably feel a little foolish, but I do doubt you'll comment on this thread again, even though you've now changed your user name to mailmarshall (I'm guessing because you're a bit embarrassed).

Edited for wayward finger reasons.

Pot......kettle............

Trailer in 3rd lane shows ignorance, stupidity and total lack of respect for other road users
Using phone whilst driving shows ignorance, stupidity and a total lack or respect for other road users
I bet you would care if I was in lane 3 with my trailer,, all 44 tons just trundling along, would I be any different to the utter tool the OP took a picture of? Christ I can see the 30 plus pages of mindless, brainless HGV hate and trust me, not a soul would pick up on the use of a phone!
Or as some have suggested, it's ok as the traffic is slow, so if it's ok to be in lane 3 with a trailer breaking the law then using the phone at the same speed is ok? Nope, didn't think so, that would mean the idiots wouldn't have a point to get hard about and try to preach to us all.
Usual pious self righteous steaming manure of a thread hijack from the self appointed and pointless PH police.

It's not illegal to be in the third lane in that situation if it's not safe to pull over

Depends on the situation. For this one? The trailer does not appear to be doing anything to affect other traffic, other than making me wonder if perhaps an accessory company should produce nicely twitchable net curtains for cars.

Agreed.

At walking-speed snarled up traffic? No, I wouldn't care, because no, you wouldn't be. You may have some additional hassle getting forty-odd feet of truck back over as traffic speed increases when compared to a small trailer behind a van, and perhaps that makes it a less than stellar idea, but for the specific example of being there at low speed? Yeah, I'm fine with that.

These two things are not equivalent. Driving with a trailer in the outermost lane is not affecting your ability to pay attention to the road, and doesn't increase the likelihood of you running into the back of someone because you weren't paying attention.

I have it from a very reliable source that the trailer driver is none other than Ronnie Pickering.

No wonder the OP has gone missing...

Probably didn't know who he was dealing with.

Really?

According to your post no one should care about a moronic law breaker in lane 3 but should care about a law breaker in lane one......? The OP is a hypocrite? They are both law breaking morons, that's both, not one but both!
They are both breaking the law, how on earth you can honestly suggest you "aren't bothered" by a trailer in lane 3 is ridiculous when you then lay into the OP for using his phone to capture it. By your logic if I see someone being kicked in by the side of the road I shouldn't capture any evidence of the incident If I am at the wheel?

To answer the multiple quotes of Initialdave, I don't need to go much further than reading the first four words of your response.........." Depends on the situation" .....no it fking doesn't !!! For christs sake, there is no situation other than an obstruction or wide load to find yourself in lane 3 with a trailer, except for that then you are a utter tool and have no idea about the law or have no regard for other road users and screw everyone else. This is why I questioned the response to me in an HGV in lane 3.
To answer your final quote about the likely hood of an accident, I would suggest that if you are stupid enough to drive in lane 3 with a trailer then by definition you are not paying attention and most likely able to use a phone etc as you have no regard for other road users.
You also have complete and utterly missed the point that no matter what the speed both parties are breaking the law with breathtaking levels of moron....however it's very easy on the Internet to be self righteous in judging the OP on his post whilst making tools out of yourselves in suggesting there is a level of acceptability when behaving like an ignorant law breaking tool on the road.
I am simply desperate to read your views on the acceptable stages of burglary when breaking the law, is just breaking a window ok but not taking anything?
Initial, you really need to read what you posted, there is no reason to be in lane 3, to do it you have to be an ignorant stupid muppet, however to take a photo of it whilst driving takes the muppetry to another level.

Bloke (I assume) towing a dinghy trailer, with dinghy, 'sailed' past me on the M40 and disappeared off into the distance. I was doing a leisurely 65 or so.......
