didn't the Mk3 only get badged Gti in the uk? elsewhere in Europe it was called the 2.0...so is it a true Gtiboxedin
Pretty sure sure it was badged as 2.0 Sport elsewhere, which is also very optomistic.
Wasn't that the Mk4?

Yes it was the Mk4, the non-turbo 2.0 was only badged "GTI" in Britain

yep , your right mk4 2.0 badged GTI in UK by dealers .

have just bought a mk4 2.0 gti ..stunning mint condition ..inside and out for £600 includes year mot .
very bland drive ... should never of had GTI badge , but once again it is mint and full tread tyres and mot for £600 ???
boogles me how cheap cars are in the U.K .. especially ones just like mk4 golf that are seen as not the real deal .

Has no one mentioned this is an Anniversary model? I think it's a good price alone just for the rarity.

I had repressed the memory so much I didnt even know what this was.
I thought Golfs went straight from the mk2 to mk4 (and thought of the 4 as a mk3.

These are THAT bad.

Had a Bora 2.0 SE for a bit, same engine as the MK4 GTI, i.e. 115 bhp of wheeze, for a 2 litre it struggled to get out of its own way, would have been massively disappointing as a supposed performance car, it lolloped about a bit but it was comfy, well made and seemingly indestructible, with a polish and a scrub up it looked new and the engine was in fine form at 100 plus thousand.

Definitely the Mark 4. It may have been a MK3 2.0SE?

I bought a third gen 16v earlier on in the year for half a bag. A different engine to this, yes, but I can vouch for MK3s as a very good (and very cheap) buy.

I use it every day (replacing a MK2 GTi 8V) and it hasn't let me down yet. It's much more refined on the motorway and feels more solid. It's also quicker and although a different steer still a great one.

Top shedding.
+1

all the negative comments above miss the point - yes it was a step back handling-wise vs a mk2 but as a shed it's a great choice, well built and solid. 115bhp isn't much but for the money that car looks great - yes a 16v or vr6 is quicker but i doubt you'd find one for this money.
You could probably get a mk1 Focus 1.8 though with more power, better handling, better looks, more reliable, cheaper to run/insure for less money.

So it's not a good shed OR a good "hot hatch"

Shed? More like a storage cupboard.

Golf's just don't do it for me at any level. Imposter GTi with its false hot hatch genesis claims just pervades my every thought about hitler's wagons (oh, and that!)

It's not an anniversary.

No red seat belts, red and grey checked seats, golf ball gear knob, red GTI badge, white dials, etc. nerd

I had a MK4 GTI 10 years ago, the one with a Turbo, so not that old then, and when I bought it it had just had new suspension bushes etc.

6 months later I'd worn them out again. Windows stopped working, air con packed up, starter motor worn out, and was glad to see the back of it.
Worst car I've had by miles.

This MK3 just looks turgid.

Ah - the Mk3 Golf. The car on which I learned a very important lesson - always do a data check when buying private.

The one I caught a cold on was a boggo 1.4l model, felt more solid than the Nova it replaced but when I got sick of the recurring garage bills and decided to get rid, I found out it had been Cat C damaged and clocked.

£2k to buy, £500 ebay sale a year later, about £2k of garage bills inbetween :-(

We had a 115bhp 8v mk3 gti golf about 9 years ago. It was a red (going pink) 3 door M reg with the same or similar bbs vr6 wheels fitted. It was a fairly poor shed even 9 years ago costing about £600 at the time. Had covered around 115k from memory and the seat foam on the bolsters was shot, so the wire frame of the seat cut into you while driving, the boot lid had a rust hole around the number plate big enough to fit several fingers though. The shocks all leaked, the central locking didn’t work, and the cam on the throttle cable snapped once leaving me stranded. The Insurance due to GTi badge was high even though performance was very poor.
Bought it for my wife primarily to run around in and she wanted a golf gti but in my opinion it was significantly worse than the rover 214 we had previously , no faster, no more reliable considerably worse on running costs, and you certainly don’t hear about people remembering rover 214s fondly as future classics. Can’t see what the fuss is about on this one.

I've owned two 8v mk3 GTI's and currently own a mk3 VR6 and apart from a few bits & bobs they've all been good cars to me, yes they have issues and 115bhp is hardly going to set the world alight BUT they are so much better than the lard arse mk4s!

Its just a regular one, running Anniversary wheels.

I did the same to mine.

I was considering the mk3 16v as my cheapo weekend hot hatch, ended up with a GTI-6 instead. The general opinion of the Golf put me off to be honest (same with the ST170), but I'm very happy with the 306, the opinion on these being much more favourable it seems.
This shed does look very tidy though
