I had a 1999 Octavia slx tdi estate 110 bhp. Top of the range in its day(sunroof and aircon and 15" alloys;wow) and cost around 16k I think. 3 years servicing and unlimited mileage warranty with 3 yrs breakdown too.
It was a damned tough car and I think it's not selective memory when I say it was far superior to VAG offerings today.
But hey that's progress.

The public gets what the public wants... cuddly dashboards seem to be more important than actual engineering integrity to most buyers.
