h sometimes isnt it. Still least you have had it. That the way I look at my Esprit. Saw a BMW Z1 at the 1989 Motorshow as a boy....
The doors, lights, seats, the aerodynamics.
That was it. I was hooked.

The 550 Maranello - when you think Lamborghini were making the Diablo, and everyone else was doing the mid-engined thing, from nowhere Ferrari made their top model front-engined.
And showed it could work dynamically.
However it was probably the launch of the 456 a few years before that got me - I didn't know at the time that modern cars could look so damn beautiful

I used to dream that one day I would own my own!
Never did, but been a fan of Ford ever since.

You're not alone, I'm glad someone else has picked those two Jags as well.A friend of mine from school days has just bought himself an XJ-S and I'm ever so slightly envious. I'm not sure if Andy Rouse is directly responsible for my years of Cosworth ownership, but I'm sure he played a part.

Wow, that's certainly addressed any criticisms of the Z1's performance by the looks of it!The doors, lights, seats, the aerodynamics.

My dad's cars when I was a kid were firmly in the 'cack' catagory. Gone was his '66 MG Midget he had before I arrived, to be replaced in succession by two(!!) Austin Allegros, an Escort mk 3 1.3L and finally an Orion GL non-turbo diesel before he passed away in '92. We did manage to crack 70 in third and top out at 92 on the speedo in the Escort once though, which felt like it was double that speed, such was the rattling and shaking going on...
Like others here it was TV and film that influenced my love for cars - Bonds's Esprit Turbo with the skis on the back (and the Alfa GTV6 in Octopussy), the Lancia Monte Carlo in the Herbie film and the black Countach in The Cannonball Run. Closest I've got to any of those so far since is my current Alfa 156 V6, which at least sounds (and is beginning to corrode) like a GTV6...
My dad had a mate who was one of those guys who did anything and everything to earn a wage, from spannering cars to running a mobile disco, to running a wedding car business. He had a white RR Shadow II which was dead silent inside as it wafted down the road, but it was his E28 BMW M535i (also white, with the huge optional bodykit) that shut me up the first time he booted it. I was genuinely pinned back in my seat - the first time I had ever felt serious acceleration, especially in comparison to my reference point as a 9 year old, the Escort!

Thank you.It is a real handful. Good fun and very fast and controllable.
S62 power Alpha-N. drive by wire 6 speed box.
To be honest the M5 I broke was no slouch either.
Sorry to be demanding, but any pics of the engine install?
For me it has to be the Audi UR Quattro, it wasnt my father who owned one (He had a string of cavaliers and a laguna now a vectra C) but my friends step dad owned a red non turbo with a quick shift kit a KnN and a scorpion exhaust system. he did use to have a set of crappy TSW venoms on it also but i advised him to change back to standard alloys.
Now it may not sound to amazing but the reason it sticks with me is every friday after school in winter he would take us out to the country lanes for a blast in the quattro true group b style (obviously without the power) he even had the rally fog lamps on the front and i will never forget the way it gripped! the sound from that 2.1 5pot with the scorpion exhaust to enhance the volume was absoultly brilliant. i think he wished just as much as we did that it was the turbo model but we had fun in the N/A model.
i was gutted when he sold it for £150 if i wasnt thirteen at the time i would have snapped it up and probably still owned it today! i have to say its my great white buffalo (the one that got away)
all was good following as he had a number of exciting cars such as a Corrado VR6 a subaru WRX estate in which he upgraded to 376bhp so there was more fun to be had but that audi will always stick in my mind and one day when/if i have the funds a sport quattro will definatly be on the cards.
(just for a visual he wasnt your typical yound hoodlum either he was a modest mid 40s business man showing the boy racers how its done)
