Why don't diesel exhaust point downward anymore?

Unless their fumes are suddenly not as harmful.
I still see them belching out the same black smoke what gives.
The cynic in me says because there used to be a uncool sigma with diesels. Now it's superficial why they don't point downward.
Going by the VW scandal, my cynical view might be right

Diesel particulates are far better than they used to be; down-turned exhausts don't really help with gaseous emissions. Fleckers said:

My S-Type was pre DPF and had these two enormous downward swept exhaust trims. The actual pipes were a much more ordinary size inside the trims but I always quite liked the way the totally OTT downswept finishers looked.Jaguar X Type 2.2D Sport Estate, 2005, pre DPF.
Fair enough that thing could lay down a smokescreen when you booted it though, I can see why they pointed them downwards. I also recall that downward facing exhausts were common on petrol cars in the 70s and 80s?

Had the same thought, especially for those with a pristine white concrete slabbed drive. More especially for those owners that don't know that a diesel engine only warms up if it's working, and think that if they sit with engine idling on drive, the heater will heat up faster. The number of deluded dirty derv drivers I've met over the years is staggering, "my car doesn't give off black smoke" etc, then I'm following them out of work and they're going at it like some sort of modern day nebelwerfer.

It's interesting you say that. My early 2014 D2 V40 keeps its exhausts nice and clean whereas the exhausts on my dads 2015 D2 V40 are black within a day of them being cleaned. There was a series of cost cutting measures between my version and my dads version and possibly an engine change in the D2 from a PSA/Ford unit to a Volvo developed unit that may have lead to this.In response to the OP, an R-Design would look pretty naff with the exhausts pointing downwards.
Back in the 90's my H reg diesel Fiestas exhaust didn't point downwards. I remember going for a replacement exhaust and the garage fitted a rear section designed for a petrol Fiesta which did point downwards, as they had run out of the rear section that I needed. I ran about with that for a week until the ordered part came in, and they swapped it over. I assume there must have been a reason that they didn't leave the point down exhaust on.
Well i do hope they return to downward. New or old diesel, immediately they accelerate all the deposits land on my car, annoying if I've just washed it.
I really do wish Audi ands Volvo even Ford would stop making diesels with S-Line or R-line it's encouraging them

Pre DPF they were turned downwards to stop your trousers getting dirty if you stood behind with the engine running. Post DPF they no longer make your trousers dirty.
We have a 2005 X-Trail. It doesn't have a DPF, yet the exhaust doesn't point downwards either. Handy for generating smoke screens and giving aggressive tailgaiters lung cancer.
