Im currently 17 and will have 1 years NCD very shortly, fingers crossed. I have had a 1.2 polo, and occasionally drive my mum's 1.6 zetec s and my dad's 1.8 a3 in the past, however am now looking for the best car for 2.5k that fills the following criteria...
Something doesn't seem right here. You are 17 with with 1 years NCB??? How many months have you actually held a full license, or are we still talking days and weeks???And you claim you've had 3 cars in the past. Surely the timescales we are talking, if this is even possible it would all be pretty much the present.
OP, Mx-5s (Mk1/2) are cheap and fun, but not fast; MINI Cooper the same. Clio 172 would be a good shout. Please don't get a Saxo VRS!

And £25k will get you an even better one.
It will, but there are limits. 2.5k will get you a tidy E36 328i.
5k will see you into an M3.
If hot hatches are your thing, St170 Focus, a good one is about 2k, a decent Mk2 ST is about 5k.
Golf GTI's and the such start at about 5 too.
So yes, spending more will get you more, but even if the OP doubled his budget he could get a lot more car for his money.
Almost any car is going to be ruinous on insurance for you.
You can find an MX5 for cheap enough that you can eat the insurance costs a bit better.
But bear in mind that the cost is likely to continue to be ruinous for the next 3 years or perhaps longer.
We've all done our time in stboxes, you'll have to be no different if you're unwilling to stump up the insurance money.

I have a stock, higher mileage EP3 Type R I would sell for about that price, does not leak or burn any oil, new clutch, well kept all that good stuff. Not a ragged out chav chariot that the cheaper Type R's tend to be.
But if you don't want a civic I would say a Clio 172 that has had recent belts (within the past year or so, they absolutely have to be replaced every 5 years, aux belts every 2)

For £2.5k, I would go Clio 172/182 rather than a ST170 which is a hell of a lot better than any Ford short of at least a Mk1 Focus RS.
There are great cars at every price point - more expensive cars are not always better. In fact, given a lot of pricier cars will be newer and therefore heavier/more laden with tech, I would argue that equivalent cheaper cars are often better drives.

In this day and age it likely takes most people a min of 3 months to pass a driving test. So at best you've only been driving under 9 months.
And if you drive mainly around town, have you actually driven more than a few thousand miles in total? Hardly enough for a new driver to really get used to the finer points of driving let alone handling.
For a start i didn't say i had 1 yr ncd, I said that I would very soon (23rd november) Secondly I have done a lot of driving in that time, considering ive only been on the roads for just under a year. Id say roughly 20 000 miles. Read what people say properly in future, before going all Sherlock Holmes on them. Also yes, the majority of my driving is around town, hence why Im looking for a nippy, small car with decent handling. And you claim you've had 3 cars in the past. 20,000 miles just driving round town. I assume your NCB is from when you started to learn to drive, so the reality is you are claiming you've done 20,000 miles in more like 8 months or under. But maybe you are courier?300bhp/ton said:

NCB is from when my insurance policy started (btw Ive now turned 18 since I posted the topic). Also im not claiming to have done 20 000 miles, Im telling you that I have done. Regarding whether I'm a courier or not, as a matter of fact I am. If you have any constructive advice id be very appreciative, if not then feel free to continue to accuse me of lying, and id be more than happy to keep explaining to you how you are wrong. Normally its how many years you've driven for they ask.
So you are courier in your own car?
Yet you've been looking at MX-5's (only insurance is too high).
Something still seems fishy. I'm not calling you a liar, but I am saying something doesn't add up. How much of your fuel do you have to fund?
Because if you really have done 20,000 miles in 8 months (2500 miles/month). Then at say 35mpg for town driving, that's £3429 so far on fuel. Or approx £430/month on fuel.
