Affordable drivers car for a 22 year old?
Discussion
I bought my Caterham at age 23 with no insurance history of my own although I'd been a named driver on the family car. It was parked on the street in N London and insurance (specialist) in the first year was about £1000. However, that was 16 years ago...
Certainly fun, great to drive, good to work on, but "looks the part"? It does to me, but that's certainly subjective.
You've got plenty of time left in life where you'll *need* more than 2 seats and a bit of luxury. Take the opportunity now to get a basic analogue lightweight car while you can easily.

Do some posters actually ever read the OP?
With all due respect, a BMW M5 V8 with 400bhp is NOT going to be reasonable to insure for a 22yo, at least not on planet earth....
You would be surprised.. I'm 21 and have a new GT-R arriving next week, fully comp insured with admiral for less than £1000, 4 years no claims and 3 points. I am also insured on my parents F10 M5 and C7 RS6, both insured with admiral for around £800 each. It is actually possible to get decent prices for high powered cars, the majority of people just assume they're going to get screwed without even shopping around. With all due respect, a BMW M5 V8 with 400bhp is NOT going to be reasonable to insure for a 22yo, at least not on planet earth....

Currently insured on a td6 Range Rover for under £1000 and only 20 with 6 points. Insurance is actually reasanable if you don't live in a scummy postcode.

I know that because this is PH we're all supposed to be millionaire company directors...but...I would suggest that it's possible that your "insurance environment" isn't exactly typical
True but its actually a more expensive area to insure than my previous address which was a terraced house on a busy road. Go figure.Theodoreallen said:
Hi guys,
I've been saving up for a while now for a new car and have a budget of about £15,000 for both car and any work needed on it. However, I'm at a loss as to what to actually get? And I'm wondering if you have any suggestions?
I would like a fun car which is easy to work on and is s nice driver, and it needs to look the part too!
Preferably it can't be too powerful as I'm only 22 and insurance would be a nightmare.
Any age is fine, and I have no preference of make, colour, shape, etc.
Cheers
Is that £15k cash or £15k of PCP?I've been saving up for a while now for a new car and have a budget of about £15,000 for both car and any work needed on it. However, I'm at a loss as to what to actually get? And I'm wondering if you have any suggestions?

That seems like a hefty vehicle budget for a 22 year old.

Insurance really can be random, just get a list of the cars you like and then trawl through the comparison sites, I think I was paying around £900 on a tuned TT Supra at 21/22(so only 5/6 years ago, feels like a world ago now though).
ETA: That was after having an N/A Supra since I was 19, which was about £1500 iirc.
