I've always washed and waxed my own cars. Less frequently recently due to health issues. F I'm meeting my boss I have reluctantly used a hand car wash place before the meeting, black opt out company car and he comments if it's dirty. I generally wash it every week I do about 25k business miles a year all weathers.

I hate using the hand wash people it as it looks st after they have finished.

Mrs always uses hand was places as I can't do hers anymore.

I used to only ever take my cars through a car wash (I know, heinous crime) when they were really dirty. I couldn't understand the obsession with washing cars on Sundays.

However, since I got my current two cars, I hand wash whichever I am using the following week on a Sunday, unless the weather is horrendous. I also polish and wax them, and clean the interior. I find it quite relaxing, and at least you have something to show for the time spent.

I have more car cleaning products than my OH.

Do I get extra points because I'm female? wink

I used to do mine very regularly - around every fortnight.

However, it's going back to the lease company in a few weeks and I simply have too many other better things to do with my hour at the weekend than washing it.

I've also discovered the local hand car wash. They do a good job, no drying blades and reasonable care, all for a fiver.

I don't think I'll be taking the new car there (at least until the novelty wears off) but happy to take the current one.

I do wash my car by hand about once a month. But, I only have buckets so it takes ages and nearly kills me (cripple) so I have to be in the right mood and the weather nice, but not too hot.

The rest of the time, I take it to a couple of Rumanian guys who charge peanuts but do an exceptional job. Door shuts all done, washed by hand, wheels cleaned spray polish on it and tyre treatment for £7.50. They also give you a couple of air fresheners.

£10 inside and out down the local hand car wash. Brilliant job, and if i am not happy they do it all again.

Would not trust anyone else to clean my car.
I enjoy it as well as said above.

Wrong way round, surely? You'll just be removing the wax.
Thats what I thought, but the guy I've used a couple of times to give it a pro valet said that way round? Always kept it gleaming anyway!

Eastern European crew do the company car once a month or so. Porsche gets washed by me, frequency depends on motivation. Spent 3 hours washing, claying, polishing and waxing it yesterday - find it relaxing and the car looked fabulous when I'd done.

I've just paid £2000 to have some PH Approved unicorn semen applied to my car's paint. It means I'll never have to wash it again.

I wash my car because I enjoy washing my car, not because I care that its dirty..

There's something about water with me, swimming, going out for bikes rides when it rains when I'm younger, not sure, but washing my car is relaxing.

I love washing my car, I even love washing her indoors' motor too!

Not a detailing fanatic but like to pre wash, shampoo, rinse, dry and wax etc. Vac out inside and make it smell fresh.

Having said that if the weather's been really stty and a good wash is only going to look good for a day or two I will let the (Bulgarian) Waves guys at work loose on it. They do a cracking job using only Autoglym gear and do in and out (Ooer) for a fiver.

Yes, wrong way round.

In a nut shell...

Polish to cut a small layer of paint off, SRP does have the ability to hide swirls a little too if deeper than the layer it removes.

Wax (natural) or sealant (synthetic) to protect the new layer of paint you have exposed.

Yep, the local Turkish hand job does a reasonable job on an unloved car but personally I hate the idea of somebody else damaging the paint or leaving swirls etc, so I do it myself.

Spend 5 hours doing mine yesterday boxedin

This.

Most of my neighbours take theirs to the local ethnic cleansers, if they bother at all. They think I'm weird.

Not anymore, I have a local company who clean my Elise inside and out, leather chamois for 15 ron (about 2.50ukp) They are very quick and very good. They do my Hilux also for 25 ron.
I have all the equipment to wash a car and thoroughly enjoy doing it, but its so convenient and a stone throw away from my street.

Heavily dependent on the quality/ pricing of your local hand car wash.

When I lived in Edinburgh, the local Eastern European car wash charged £5 and were totally half-arsed.

In Chiswick, the local guys were Africans with those little individual trolleys in Sainsburys car park. £6, and quality job.

My current local (Eastern European) in Watford charge £5, and do an excellent job. They put something on the softtop that rejuvenates it nicely, and the tyre dressing lasts forever.

I do like to polish/ T-Cut occasionally after the car has been washed for me. Wouldn't bother putting tokens/ coins in those petrol station forecourt washes and getting my winklepickers wet these days.

My left/ liberal persuasions aside, the quality of work that these car washes do for the money is reason enough to not lose sleep about the current migrant 'crisis'.

Wonder who does Katie Hopkins' brand new Range Rover for her? Presumably the father of the drowned child from that 'staged' photo...

I got into detailing a few years back, spent a crapload on the gear and used to wash my car twice a week. Stoppes giving a toss a couple of years ago and the current motor gets a wash at the local £5 place every 6 months or so max. I tend to keep the interior cleaner than the exterior.

Sadly my laziness has caused the alloys to get heavily pitted from brake dust. I'll just use these wheels for winter and can switch to a better set in the spring.

Shouldn't that say clearcoat rather than paint? Not trying to be a pedantic arse but I always thought it was basecoar, paint and then clear on the majority of cars out there. I agree about the method you suggested though.

That reminds me, I still have a soddinf paint depth gauge sat about along with a G220 etc that I haven't touched in years.

I usually wash each of the cars I own once- just before I take the photos to sell it.
