Literally at the end of my tether now.
I've been looking for a diesel manual 940 or 740, don't ask why because I don't know either, and they just simply don't seem to exist.

I've phoned 25+ local car dealerships, a local Volvo main dealer who hasn't seen one in four years, and I've tried pretty much every website to find one:
carandclassic
autotrader
Wight bay
eBay
trovit
classiccarsforsale
retrorides
PH classifieds
gumtree

Local auctions don't have any, Lakes Volvo in Bedford don't have one for sale either.

The one single one that is/was on eBay, a grey 740 estate, hasn't moved for the last 10 years and is a heap, and is up on the border of Scotland.

The other one I've found weeks ago on carandclassic is owned by an old chap, it's a red estate, been using water for the last 7 years and he's been topping it up with K seal and tap water. not had belts for 8 years either. Barge pole, etc.

Anyone able to provide me with some form of contact for someone selling one somewhere, or any help as to where I can find one? I'm based in Winchester but I'm willing to go anywhere in the UK to get one.

I'm absolutely desperate. I even rang a Kia dealership, at 9 in the morning.

Silly question - but why do you want a diesel? The petrols are thirstier but are much stronger and longer lasting than the derv version.

The boggo four cylinder engines should be good for 300,000 miles if looked after.

how about a 240 D? hens teeth !

I know little of the 940's, but the even older 740's will be rare.

My father ran Volvo's for decades: you rarely saw a 740 D on the roads in the 80's.

I'd imagine their fuel economy as a D will be terrible stil, bit like 80's Mercs: not a patch on modern big diesel cars. Although I'm sure capable and reliable.

I like the 6 cylinder sound, I like the simplicity and durability of the engine, and I've also acquired half a ton of used vegetable oil and various parts to convert it to run on pure veg oil for the grand total of £75.

I just want something different as well, every man and his dog has had a redblock. obviously its awkward but I like to try new things.

These things weren't common when new, and most will have been run into the ground being used as a van.

I have to ask - have you much experience of driving these old school diesels? They are pretty awful, there is a good reason only the most tight fisted fkers used to own them. I think even with free chip oil to run it on unless my only alternative was walking I would still not be interested.

Sell the oil and stuff to some skinflint and put the money towards a car that is more transportation than punishment? Really nice clean V90 and 960/940 models turn up fairly regularly.

I just don't really want anything else, I'm looking for this car because reasons.

I just can't find one for sale, and am looking for one, not advice about them. There were several for sale a few weeks ago but have now sold frown

In that case it's the same advice as you always get when looking for a very specific and uncommon car - wait and keep looking and eventually something will turn up! In this case I think you might have a very, very long wait to find one that isn't an abused intergalactic mileage heap.

Just figured I'd post up here, just in case someone's grandparents had one or there was one in a local garage or something along those lines. You don't find without looking!

Have you thought about an old French diesel? Maybe a 305 or something?

They will run quite happily on used vegetable oil.

Probably easier to find too.

I've considered a lot, and have come the the decision that this is what I want.

I just want to find one.

I really don't want anything else.

the one mentioned in my original post, it's a bit of a heap, and 400 odd miles away, and hasn't moved for a decade
