PHTV Clip of the Day - SUV drag race
PH joins a drag race between mega SUVs; chooses one with biggest engine - right decision?
Not that long ago a sub-five to 60 acceleration time was the preserve of full-on supercars. Now you can do it in a two-tonne plus SUV. Progress of sorts and whatever your opinions of such vehicles a mighty impressive party piece.
So which is the fastest off the line? Simple test; we took a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, a BMW X5 M and a Jeep Cherokee SRT8, lined them up on a runway and awaited a green light for go. Did we pick the right one though? You'll have to watch the vid to find out!

So what's the price difference between the vehicles then?
Jeep - £63kBMW - £90k
Porsche - £118k
Not sure why the video says Cayenne Turbo S is £107k, that is wrong.
The pricing is just outrageous. I know you will get plenty of discount on the Beemer as their list prices are the same as the RRPs used by telemarketing channels. But is the Porsche actually being sold for that much cash?

well you know the BMW has the most power. The 4.4L twin turbo is easily over 600hp in the M6 grand coupe, so should be the same here.
I had this engine before and I thought it was 560bhp? Or are they known to run strong? It was a powerful engine, but not a match for the Merc 5.5 biturbo for sheer brute force and face ripping pulling power.
I am really impressed that the Beemer performed so well against the Porsche, I'd be interested to see how they compare on track as it looks like BMW are gunning for the title of best performance SUV that the Porsche has had for some time.
Pro-charger sell a kit that will boost the Jeep by another 200+hp for only around £4000

I think it was Evo who recently tested the Cayenne Turbo S vs. X6M vs. RRS SVR and the X6M came out on top so yes, it does seem like BMW are winning the race at the moment. It was a powerful engine, but not a match for the Merc 5.5 biturbo for sheer brute force and face ripping pulling power.

Now, throw the Tesla model X in.
Eerily quiet cabin. Essentially no maintenance. Far fewer consumables. And in 10 years, it will have an upgraded user interface as well as features / enhancements which it didn't have when new.Not to mention: absurdly quick 0 to 100mph.
An interesting outlier to consider here, the Model X.
I recently sat in the new X5M whilst at my local dealership. I know it was knocking on £100k but even still, the quality of the interior really surprised. It was absolutely gorgeous, from the leathers and contrast stitching used to carbon fibre trims, it was lovely. Definitely the car to go for if you don't want the flashness of the RRS SVR or Cayenne Turbo.

However, the other cars will do standing starts all day to suit the needs of the director and photographers and then be driven home. The Tesla will need the overnight attentions of an umbilical cord.
Or 25 minutes at a supercharger. And it'll cost you...nothing. Aside from a coffee whilst you wait. Short nights where you are?The other cars will need refuelling at some point too. But you forgot that.

I expect there's a supercharger at RAF Alconbury, or at least at the nearby Shell. The other cars will need refuelling at some point too. But you forgot that.

Was launch control used on the Porsche?
Having driven this X5M can confirm its a very rapid machine albeit not quite RS6 fast. Wouldnt change my Cayenne for it tho as aside from sheer straightline speed it still falls short in a number of areas that matter for me.
I don't think Launch Control would have made much difference to be honest.Having driven this X5M can confirm its a very rapid machine albeit not quite RS6 fast. Wouldnt change my Cayenne for it tho as aside from sheer straightline speed it still falls short in a number of areas that matter for me.
Still I'm of the same opinion as you. Would keep my Cayenne over the BMW.
