First Car: Mazda 3 or BMW 1 series?

We have a 2010 Mazda 3 1.6 in TS2 trim as the daily family driver. It's a very competent car and the ts2 and upwards come with lots of goodies to keep you busy.
Fit and finish wise it's on a par with the mk2 seat Leon we used to have, and personally I felt it to be more spacious than a 1 series. Styling wise it's also better than the golf blandness.
It's not what I would call a small car for a first time driver, but there's nothing much wrong with it. If you like it, go for it.
