Is it legal to remove the windscreen and surround?
Discussion
I emailed IVS... No reply as of yet O_o
Would an MOT garage be able to advise?
I see there are two z3 body types, normal and wide body... Problem solved on that count!
So its just the windscreen issue getting in the way now, once (if...) thats cleared up then this project will be a go!
Someone mentioned basing it on a space frame kit car. Good idea, one ive already thought of, but a much more exoensive donor car so not really viable (unless someone can show me a road legal kit car for sale for under £2k...)

It will drive horrendous though.
Like all widened cars do, right? Not particularly realistic comparison.

The "wide body" Z3s are the ///M versions.Would an MOT garage be able to advise?

Wow. Even though I'm a fellow 'newbie', some of the responses here seem incredibly rude. I'm just glad that my first threads weren't questions like this.
Surely as car enthusiasts we should agree that variety is the spice of life? We don't all like Mazda MX5s, we don't all like MR2s being reshelled as 'Ferraris', and we don't all like the stuff that Leepu and his bald mate used to build. However, it all feels a bit school playground (and a touch unnecessary) to attempt to ridicule someone who came here looking for answers, particularly when he's trying to do something himself that is a bit different.
To the OP, I would perhaps try a specialist 'kit car' forum for advice, or perhaps there's a sub-forum here that might attract a better quality of reply.
I think I'll steer clear of General Gassing in future.

Z3 already have roll hoops behind the seats.
Removing the windscreen will make it incredibly flexible - in a bad way!
I can't see those being roll hoops, much more likely the more common 'style' hoops. The rule of thumb and motorsport rule is that the hoop or roll over bar needs to be 6" above head height to allow for movement of your body in a roll. Unless this lady is a giant that clearance is nowhere near enough http://prettycarz.com/odin/BMW%20Z3/bmw-z3-03.htmlRemoving the windscreen will make it incredibly flexible - in a bad way!
As for the flexibility, the car will be affected but, as others have mentioned, being a convertible most of the stiffness there will be from the bulkhead.
