Do those dimensions bring it within the Kei Car class?

If so, presumably, it will have a <660cc engine with <64bhp

This looks like it'll be a lot of fun!
Definitely on the potential new car list!

Nope, too long and too wide. But if they want to entice young motorists, cheap insurance will surely mean something not much bigger as an engine.

That floating roof is dreadful. I want it to go away from my eyes forever.

How can one compare a 650cc Coupe to a 2 litre convertible.
Honestly some people on P/H do spout a lot of rubbish.
This thing will have a 1.5 litre abrox 130 hp engine. So quite close to the entry level mx5.

Along with the Honda S660, that's the second car in a week to make the MX-5 look a bit lardy.

Looks really promising.
Pictures are obviously deceiving then, the ND MX5 is 8cm shorter, 4cm wider and 10cm lower.

Not even close, it's 60cm too long and 21cm too wide.

There's a rumour circulating that they're aiming for 980kg with a 1.5 litre 130hp engine.

Liking the idea. Not liking the gaping mouth front.

Suspect in the second line you meant to say Toyota wants to entice them rather than entire them...

Great idea, poor execution.
Like the GT86 then...and by that I mean, remind yourselves of the concept GT86, and ask yourself why did the final design have to be so badly fiddled with. I mean it's ok in as much the general profile/idea has survived, but the final execution was a dated look as soon as it was released...

I hold zero hope for the S-FR

It would be kind of cute * if it was the Toyota Bass / Toyota Billy

  • Actually, no it wouldn't
Love the idea of it though, just can't stand the look of it.

It's like the designer drew each bit individually and then e-mailed them to someone else to stitch them together. Each part when looked at in isolation looks ok. It's just when you take in the whole that you think eh?!?.

Not keen on the bonnet hump. I'd hope for a flat four a la GT86 to keep the weight lower.

Apart from that front grill, doesn't look too bad. Just a shame a bit more thought wasn't given to the front bumper; perhaps just something to break up that grill would help.

Looks are subjective, but I'd suggest you might be in the minority with that opinion - at least outside of these forums. Obviously I'm biased but I think the GT86 looks cracking and it's one of the reasons I was drawn to it in the first place. But I've never had a car which has experienced such positive opinion on it's looks, not just from friends and family, but from complete strangers. I'm quite often approached at petrol stations with people commenting on how good the car looks and it seems to get a lot of positive attention in traffic too.

Not trying to sound boastful or say your opinion is worth any less merit, but I've seen a couple of other people state the same thing on these forums like it's gospel truth; yet I'd say that if complete strangers are going out of their way to compliment the car, then it can't be that dated or ugly.

It looks like they want to appeal to the Fiat 500/Vauxhall Adam crowd, but in a 'cheeky sports car' way.

No thanks. FT-1 please.

It wouldn't be a bad marketing move. I reckon there's a decent market for people who want a small, lightweight "city" car but aren't particularly interested in the profile or looks of modern hatchbacks.

Also, FT-1...hnnnggg. I'm not sure that will ever see production though, I thought it was pretty much just a concept (unless you know otherwise?).

In the main picture I think it looks pretty smart but from full-side on not so much, a bit too much behind the rear wheels IMO (possibly as a result of saftey regs?). For some reason I don't mind Jap cars looking a bit kooky, though. If it were a Euro car then it would seem a bit contrived - wilfully wacky - but with the Japs you know that they genuinely thought it looked good, which I think is brilliantly bonkers.

And as an aside, anyone who thinks a GT86 is not a good looking car must be wired fundamentally different to me, in the flesh they're fantastic looking things.

Is it planned to be imported to the UK and if so when/how much - £16k to £20kish to keep it under the GT86?
