Rover P6s are very good cars.

Metros and Novas are very poor cars.

Not at all. I have no objection to you buying it, I just wouldn't want it myself.

Just being old doesn't make a P-O-S anything other that a P-O-S. Hateful things, shed fail.

My endearing memory of these is the helpful shelf under the steering column, just in the right position to smash your legs off in anything other than a very light front end crash.

The only FWD Vauxhall of this era I haven't owned. Nice piece of nostalgia, and always good to see anything of that age in such nice condition.

Interesting shed by virtue of its nostalgia value and sheer rarity.

2 doors and a boot, that's a coupe I tell ya!
I had a 1.2L "coupe" as my first car. L spec I think just gave you a shelf under the glove box and a passenger side mirror, such luxury in a 1984 car!
You'd be surprised the bragging rights that extra mirror gave you over friends with a "single mirror" Nova.
Happy days. Nova Coupe... a future classic? :-)

Many many many years ago, I went out with a young lady who owned a Nova. One evening my car (a knackered MG BGT) developed a fault so we had to take the Vauxhall.

Firstly why was third gear way, way over there? Secondly how much understeer? First round about approach at normal speed and wooooh! The front ploughed on.

Its a shed alright probably ideal for putting chickens in but I wouldn't want to drive one again.

My first car - a hand-me-down from my older sister (she got it when she passed her test from my Nan)

I'll always have fond memories of it. It never let me down, not even once. I even picked up a mate, his mountain bike and my girlfriend on my first ever journey in it.

It would run out of steam going up the hill on the A505 to Luton. It was a struggle.
My grandad had a turquoise Spin 3dr with those bright white wheeltrims. Someone stole them and he could only get the grey ones like on the car advertised to replace them.

Quantify that opinion with real life experience for me, I'd really like to see just how big a hole you can dig for yourself

Ah, memories. My first car was a 1983 Nova 1.0. Tastefully done in mocha brown, with beige check interior and green carpets. Heady days. I then upgraded to a 1.2 'swing', before realising the error of my ways, and buying a Pug 1900.

Here is a bonus question

What edition of the Nova had balloons on it?

I ask as my mate got given one when he passed his test, was as fook.

It's just a normal old car. No better or worse than a mid-range AX, Polo, 5, Micra etc. of the era. I don't know why everyone holds such strong views about it.

I would say it's boring. Plain to look at, not capable enough to want to drive and not old enough to marvel at. Just like any of the cars I mentioned above.

Yes, some irony there, the Nova deserves its place in the cultural and motoring history of this country as much as the P6B after which our friend has named himself, just for different reasons, I get nostalgic about songs I hated at the time but are glad to hear them now, nostalgia is weird but brings fun and comfort.

I agree.

The Nova was never especially crap, it was just a run-of-the-mill hatchback. It lacked the sparkle of the best of its class but it was a bit better than the worst.

We used to have them on the rental fleet, I always rated them above the Metros, Fiestas and Renault 5s. In 1989 we used a white 1.2L 5 door as the 'runner' for a couple of weeks, I was quite surprised when I managed to get an indicated 75mph out of it in 2nd gear.

Had a 1.2 as a company car, tried driving considerable distances @ 70 mph in 2nd gear and it would not die.
Commute to work involved 2 hump back bridges, defiantly flew better than the 205 GT that eventually replaced it.
