Hey! Let's block lane 3 at rush hour for my trivial accident
Discussion
Not much of a rant, but more of a "WTF is wrong with people?".
Every now and then on the motorway I'll get caught up in a snarl up or jam and what it turns out to be is two or three cars, always in the outside lane. They'll be stopped with a few people standing there peering at some either invisible or very trivial (eg. broken indicator, number plate) damage or waving documents about.
Are these people total bellends? Are they waiting for forensics to turn up and take measurements? In the meantime lets create a ten mile jam.
Is it beyond their wit to pull over onto the hard shoulder and debate the matter of responsibility there?

I don't spend long in lane 3 - too many plonkers with too much bhp and lots of distractions.
My thoughts exactly - I do 60 miles a day on the M62 and I have my own little challenge to try and do the whole lot while never ever going in lane 3. It's no slower.I make the odd exception, but I'll only move out if I can see that I can get out, squirt past the vehicle in L2 and get back in again without having to slam on the brakes and do a full emergency stop.
Blimey maybe they are in shock
Perhaps as the traffic was at a standstill already they thought it was ok to get out and don't realise how quick it picks up.
If traffic was at a standstill I'd want a photo for proof at the place it happened , I'd also worry the car behind would drive off if I move if they crashed into me
Its also bloody difficult to get across to the hard shoulder, more so when the lanes are all at a standstill. I remember when my car cut out at 90 in fast lane, no power nothing,, traffic around moving quickly, getting across to the hard shoulder was a nightmare, car behind beeping , cars in middle not letting me in, I was a sitting duck
yeah in an ideal world you'd get across to hard shoulder asap, but its not an ideal world and most people panic in situations like that and make mistakes.

As the motorway has an IQ during the day, the individual lanes also have them. Lane three is the lowest especially in rush hour and often the bump (cannot call it an accident) is the result of some tard not paying attention, I see it as a selfish act. Problem then is the IQ will drop in the other lanes as no one will want to let them out but everyone wants to gawk. We seem to deserve each other.
I refer to the minor scrapes and not the deaths and injuries.

There was one on the M23 Northbound this morning around 7am........a little damage on the one in front to the boot but not much on the other as far as I could see, but still had to slow down to a crawl to get past it -could both have easily moved to hard shoulder......
I went pass this going south and it was causing tailbacks to the M25 because of Rubber neckers Charlie1986 said:

Bloody rubbers need to be shot !!!What I can't understand is that there has been millions upon millions of £s spent on replacing the central armco with concrete blocks... why didn't someone think to make these a couple of feet higher which would effectively block the majority of drivers from rubber necking across oncoming carrigeways....

Playing devils advocate here, but perhaps whatever caused the bump meant they had to stop (Person in front slamming anchors on then the two cars behind come together). Once you are stopped it is very hard to get from lane 3 to the hard shoulder even in slow moving traffic.SteveSteveson said:

I've had that - I was in lane 3 of the M4 near Reading services once in stop/start traffic, only on one of the stops the guy in the Focus behind wasn't paying attention and stoved in the back of my 205 - tailgate, boot floor, etc. Since none of the lanes were moving I hopped out and walked back to see if he was ok and get his details. Instead I was met by a tirade of abuse along the lines of "that car shouldn't be in the fast lane", "get out of the way, I have to get to work", and when I asked again for his details "I haven't got time for this now, you need to let me past".
This carried on right until the white Volvo with the blue lights pulled up behind the Focus when all of a sudden I was his mate and he had all the info in his glovebox - funny that.
Still I got a mention on Radio Berks traffic news for the "slow traffic past the scene of an accident".

The cost difference would be pretty huge when you consider how many miles of motorway there are. However I agree about the rubber necking retards, it's infuriating. If a copper could hand out 3 points to every brain dead moron that slowed to stare at an accident I'd be delighted. What I can't understand is that there has been millions upon millions of £s spent on replacing the central armco with concrete blocks... why didn't someone think to make these a couple of feet higher which would effectively block the majority of drivers from rubber necking across oncoming carrigeways....

Plus reduce headlight glare. Cost I'd guess. What I can't understand is that there has been millions upon millions of £s spent on replacing the central armco with concrete blocks... why didn't someone think to make these a couple of feet higher which would effectively block the majority of drivers from rubber necking across oncoming carrigeways....
I remember a crash on the M32. I was at the front watching in my rear view mirror and by luck they stopped short of hitting me.
one or two of the cars were poorly with radiators gone etc. The motorbike cop who was the only one to make it through the traffic, said right - if it starts drive it over, no matter what noise it makes....

On that subject; it would also let people drive on motorways at night with their lights on full! I guess that would save some lives if there is anything in the road.
It doesn't stop some people. Many times I've passed a car on a motorway or DCW and pulled back in only to find they are happily driving away on full beam, oblivious to any vehicles around them.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
