Lol at an Audi mentioned. These are road going race cars and on a track little will touch them around 200bhp. To have 280bhp-300bhp hot hatches not breaking 6 secs to 60 this will leave many red faced at the lights!! 1120kg unheard of now.

105k miles is nothing for the Teg B18C engine. I thrashed the nuts off my DC2 for 8 years, from 75k miles when I bought it, to 160k miles when I sold it, and the engine never used a drop of oil between changes.

It is proper weird refreshing Pheads for the 4th time in a day to alleviate the boredom of work, and and seeing your ad on the front page. Its my ad! And I’m the seller!! Kind of makes me think I shouldn't be selling it...

Nice article and keep saving up Matt. They’re awesome cars. Maybe we can do some kind of wonga thing where you pay some now and some later?

Interestingly I have always wondered if your articles make cars sell quicker or price up other similar cars – I guess I’ll find out now!

Baby + business + expenses + noparking = two car limit from the wife. The enforced cull has gone well so far. The Maser, 930 and others have gone. Now left with the Integra (hoping it doesn’t sell), a Lexus IS300 Sportcross (we have loved it but someone please take it away now) and the TVR Griffith (I’m hoping to hold onto, but may have to let go if the Integra hasn’t gone by the end of the ad as we’re losing our parking)… plus the R32 as the sensible family car to keep. Looks like it’s a TVR vs Integra showdown then.

Some responses to the above…

“Not sure why anyone would buy this when you can lease a brand new Audi A3 for not much a month”
Because the alternative to buying this is to lease a brand new Audi A3 for “not much a month”. Note that “not much” is in fact a lot. Total false economics. In 3 years of owning this you have profited (slow appreciation + low running costs) and driven an icon. In 3 years of driving a new Audi you have spent £5000 to own nothing. And you have no girlfriend or friends any more. And have crashed and died because you’re an audi-driving obsessive tailgater. Integra aside, I find leasing is insanity when you can drive appreciating icons for less (or if you’re lucky be paid for it). Running a McLaren F1 for the last 3 years would have cost less than running a 320d.

“Wouldn't say that one is particularly worth it. The JDM '98 spec is the one to go for. Oh and if you can find a yellow one with yellow recaros, the seats will go for a grand”
Yellow on yellow would be very cool. I almost bought the last one that came up but it was expensive and didn’t have a full history. I also prefer the headlights and UKness of this style, and wanted one unmodified. Each to their own. Ps. If you sell the seats it might be a little uncomfortable to drive.

“I'd like another DC2 but not that one, it's an absolute nail.”
I don’t know what nail means in this context. Is it good or bad? Does “nail” mean original with a full service history.

“105,000 miles chav-rocket for £4k?
Flip that coin. Is it,
A. One careful owner, or
B. Utterly ragged”
I can’t account for every owner but I bought it from a level-12 Honda mage, and it is all original with a full nerdy history from day one. So probably not ragged from the condition it is in. But who knows what happened in 100k miles! Hopefully it has had some adventures and been used like it was intended.

“I've had it saved in my eBay watch list for a while.”
Please please please please do not come and see the car or bid. It is as good as a 15 year old car gets but it is 15 years old. The Honda mechanic who serviced it is considering buying it, which is normally a good sign. Not being mean, but maybe just have a sense of realism. The £10k one was probably fresher, but I’d rather have the £6k for the business. Wehave turned down 5 viewers (I like to check people are serious first and put them off if not as we’re crazy busy) and had one come so far (liked the condition but had never driven a ITR so wanted to go away and think about it as a viable alternative to his Evo). I am reminded of one person who came to see the Porsche “It has a tape deck so I’m going to knock off what I need for an MP3”. No you’re not! That’s the uber-rare original 1986 tape deck!

I won't then. Not sure why you think I wouldn't have been serious. It's been saved in my watch list for a while so I could get in touch when I wasn't crazy busy as we've just moved house etc and I didn't want to waste your time with a load of questions without having the time to view. I needed something fun to replace the 900 mile Clio V6 I have, which will be put away for winter.

Whatever. Good luck with the sale.

I love that attitude from buyers, "I'm going to knock x off because it hasn't got y." I foresee a wasted journey for you...

Nothing stands out as particularly good condition on that apart from the seats. Yes the seller claims the paint is original, who cares? I'd much prefer he'd gone and had that rear bumper sorted out at a decent enough bodyshop, will save me having to do it as I wouldn't be driving it around like that. Engine bay looks tatty.

I think the condition of most of these for sale is poor in general, I'm comparing that to the S2000. I've just sold mine and OK it was almost triple the price of this but you'll get a much tidier S2000 for £4k with similar mileage which is definitely more of a sound investment if you want to look at it as one.

Having had a DC2 and now a DC5, it looks an okay car, but a few alarm bells ringing.

Having taken an absolute dump of a DC2 and restoring it to almost showroo, with now engine internals, suspension bushings and rebuilt the seats with recaro parts, ive seen all there is to see of what can go wrong and what breaks.

These are appreciating in value but £4k is a tad steep, (this is only going by what i can see), first bit that catches my eye, why does it have the wrong H badge on the nose (new ones are £30 but, ebay versions are cheap and nasty, the fact the rear still has its red H makes it look odd< especially with the slightly odd shut lines of the bumper.

Red rocker cover is almost not, yes its a cosmetic thing, but it makes the whole engine look tired, and is an easy fix with Frost VHT wrinkle paint.

seat bolster is collapsed, again an easy but expensive fix at £50 a time.

Scuiffs and tired paintwork would also have me looking hard for any rust bubbles, as all the rust hides inside the panels, as water gets in from the rear wheel as 2 panels meet with a slight gap where ALL the water gets shoved!!

Lovely cars though, miss my DC2 a lot.

A worrying number of people on this thread appear to actually need the whoosh parrot...

Anyway, utterly wonderful cars. I owned a lesser DC2 Si some years ago which wasn't too far off Type R spec and even that was one of the most enegaging cars I've ever owned, or driven for that matter.

Maybe I'm biased but these are SUCH good cars.

I got mine silly cheap (2.5k) but at 164,000 miles she's strong as ever, no oil usage. Has done a ring trip and Oulton park in the last few months and was faultless.

Bodywork is the killer with these cars, rear arches and sills are notorious for rusting inside out.

Find one that hasn't been abused, keep on top of any bodywork and it will be fantastic - no matter what you are used too.

Each to their own, but if I get another message totaling up the costs for cosmetic or pointless items, or comparing it to another completely different car, personally I might try and delete the internet. Here is an actual paste from an ebay person - I love it for its detailed analysis of the possible costs he may incur, most of all for his grammar in shortening "I" to "'"

Mate heres the deal
Bumpers 500
Engine bay 500
Wheels 250
Few mods 750

'Make that £2000 left over after
Cash 2day?

For anyone who cares (possibly noone), the high / low / average offers on the car so far have been 3850 / 2000 / 3710

So, social experiment. If I get time at the weekend I'm going to put it back up on eBay at £4999 and keep it on here at £3999 and see what happens. I suspect

> people will offer more than £3999 if it is up for £4999
> £4999 will put off most timewasters from even bothering to offer
> most people who would actually buy a DC2 Type-R are petrolheads and therefore pistonheads fans, and will therefore have already read this post

Don't you just love selling cars??

At £3850 you probably should have bitten his hand off, that's clearly a decent offer on an asking price of £4000. I always think it is stupid when people put up cars at a price and say "no offers". The psychology of a used car purchase for most is that they want to chip something off the asking price even if it is only as little as £150. If £4000 was the least you would take you should have put it up for £4250, which gives you room to give the buyer "some money off" and for you to get what you really want.

Maybe I should put it up for £10,000 O.F.O.

(or far offer)
