I've been looking at a few S classes and 7 series for sale around London - ones that have been PCO cars seem to have to be MOTd annually (some seem every 6 months?) and the mileages are amusing - a few that do 30k in year 1/2 then all of a sudden are for sale with 80k miles and have done 2/3k between MOTs in the last 2 years.

I think this is really useful if only to see what happened to your old cars.

Checked on my 96 Volvo 850 which I traded in in 2001 at 110k miles. Seems it soldiered on to north of 219k in 2008. Its successor, a S60 2.0T, I traded in before it required an MOT but I think the mileage was about 23k. That one lived to 2012 with a mileage exceeding 173k miles. Not a bad performance as any fails were for relatively trivial issues such as tyres or headlight alignment.

I guess in an ideal world you'd probably like to see just a series of passes with no advisories, hopefully indicating that the owner/s have taken care of stuff prior to it becoming a must fix MOT issue.
I think some testers are a bit over enthusiastic with Advisories, like on one of my cars, what do you think of this:- eek

I wish I knew of this site before the purchase of my first car. Not very PH friendly and was only £700 but my Nissan Micra X reg has had a few unforeseen problems.

Full Story below, skip to end if you cant be bothered to read me rant.

We had a look over the vehicle before we purchased it. Seemed ok, drove ok on the 5 minute test drive they allowed us. 1 key was about to break, but there were two and we assumed 1 was the spare, I mentioned it was broken when we put down the deposit and, kind of expected them to fix it.

On picking up the car, it had not been cleaned, and it was absolutely empty of petrol. I was obviously annoyed but I am a timid guy what am I going to do, I thought if I asked them to clean it and fill it up they would just laugh tell me no, I could escalate and ask for a refund at which point they walk away with the £100 deposit and I get £600 back.

It also turned out that at some point either the ignition or the door locks have been changed, 1 key operated the ignition and the drivers door, the other key (the one about to break in half) opened all the doors.

Next day dad goes to put some fuel in it to make sure it can make it to a petrol station and the key breaks. I call up the place I bought it from and they tell a pack of lies about using the key every day and having no problems with it, and that it would fall under the warranty they have to legally provide. I take it to the Nissan dealer who helps me out a ton, and tells me that at some point the locks have been changed, the broken key doesn't match with the ignition key, and only reason ignition key works on drivers door is probably the amount of wear on it. He can make a copy of igniton key but since I wanted one key to operate whole vehicle he feels it would be a waste of money, which I agree with. I then follow the second hand car dealer and Nissan advised and take the broken key pieces to a key cutter and I now have a key to open the doors.

Following seeing the mot history site mentioned on here, and with how cheap they turned around the Micra, (not even a new air filter). I thought it best to check it out. What do I find but the following,

Test date: 1 September 2015
Test Result: Fail
Odometer reading: 121,992 miles
MOT test number: 4213 2123 0686
Reason(s) for failure:

nearside front Front constant velocity joint gaiter damaged to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc (2.5.C.1a)

offside front Front constant velocity joint gaiter damaged to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc (2.5.C.1a)

nearside front Suspension arm ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)

offside front Suspension arm ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)

Advisory notice item(s):

washers partially bloked

oil half way on dip stick

all brake pipes corroded

I took it to a local garage to have a check for rust, (due to the advisories in past about brake pipe corrosion), and to do a service. (I had assumed to pass the second mot 2 weeks later they would of had to of fixed the items it failed on).

Local garage checked it out, no rust problems but the CV gaiters are split and he advises me to replace them. So £280 later my car is serviced and the cv gaiters replaced.

Sorry if this sort of thing has been covered already in the threads above, but by the time i found it, there are 11 pages to go through and i am at work, but i am a bit annoyed at my MOT centre.

My car is an 05 plate Seat Leon FR, and it has never had an advisory, not in all 127k miles.

I took mine for a test in July, and it passed without advisory.

Now i have looked at the site, and found they failed it at first, and then passed it. They failed it on front number plate insecure, when clearly they did nothing to resolve the issue that didn't exist, and then passed it without doing a thing or moving the car.

Now i'm not complaining at the fact that they may have found something i wasn't aware of, but i am annoyed at the fact they should have issued the failure notice to me, when they have hidden this information from me.

Is not illegal?

Suspect not if they didn't charge you twice etc.
No one would worry about something like that when buying, you'll always get the odd daft fail or advisory. The only thing i look for are corrosion failures or ongoing advisories that show a complete lack of maintenance ie handbrake binding or poor for 4 years on trot before failing and 2 nails in rear tyres for 3 yrs like one car I've checked out this week.

Brilliant link, thanks, brought back fond memories of some previous cars I've owned.

Nice to see my '03 S2000 still on the road at 95,000 miles - must be someone's summer car now as it only did about 2000 miles last year. I regret selling it.

Incredibly my 306 S16 was still on the road until last year, but doesn't look like it was worth doing the work for the last MOT - pretty catastrophic electrical failures...

Thanks for posting this, just potentially saved me from buying a shed! Trader selling a car on ebay as perfect, but have just found out it failed its MOT yesterday for ABS light and in June this year had advisories for EML and smoking engine. The trader lied over email about the car failing yesterday and said it will have a new ticket tomorrow and he does not foresee any issues. I have pulled out of the deal now rolleyes

My trusted local garage told me they failed my cars MOT on purpose just to keep up appearances. Apparently it looks odd if they always do preventative maintanence before the MOT and all cars pass first time. Maybe it is good for them. However I now have a fail recorded on my cars history. It was for worn rear brake discs - which I asked to be replaced before the MOT. It now makes my car look like it was maintained by a . Thanks so much.

I think its a brave move to allow this to be checked, I always thought it odd to only be able to check a cars MOT history once you had hold of the number off the V5 or the current ticket.

It shows me how the last owner looked after the car as much as the service records, IE as in recurring issues not being rectified year on year and how long a set of tyres really last!

The old one went down a couple of weeks ago due to the change to the new DVSA (I think), the new site no longer requires the MOT test number or the V5 reference number.
Just put the registration in and the make in then you get the MOT history, should make buying cars a little smoother.

Brilliant, thank you for posting the link on PH which I couldn't find when doing a search on google for valid MOT history and mileage info.

It's a pity that the mileage history only goes back to 2011, let's hope they will be adding more info before it comes off BETA after listening to feedback being made.

To the developers of the vehicle MOT history website can I just say well done, and they even provide an email address for further feedback, email is: mot.Modernisation@vosa.gsi.gov.uk

Maybe the problem did exist, so they fixed it for free with a couple of sticky pads, and then issued the valid certificate?

Just had a look at a couple of my old high mileage cars I sold on...
1. Volvo S70 T5 - Sold 200 at 212k miles in 2006 yet shows MOT Pass in 2011 with only 89k miles!!!!
2. Audi A8 Quattro Sport - Sold at 203k miles in 2009 Failed MOT on 'Nearside Front Macpherson strut insecure' - they don't have McPherson struts!!!
Also mileage is now 203,925 miles at last MOT (2012)
3. Mercedes C240 (1998) - Sold with 80k miles in 2000 - passed last MOT in 2014 with 148k miles. Wonder if it finally succumbed to rust?

That S70 has a huge mileage discrepancy!
