Am I reading that right? 150bhp from a 2.6 V6?
I wouldn't complain too much the 2.9 V6 in a XR4x4 only had 150bhp so its not too bad.

I have always liked these, love the shape and interior, good shed.

Yep - positively glacial! Even the 2.8 VR6 in the Golf only had 176bhp. It was a lot back then though.
Plenty of cars from yesteryear have a comparatively low output compared to modern cars for their size.

These spring to mind:

Sierra XR4i - 150hp from 2.9
Rover V8 - 150hp from 3.5
Escort RS Turbo - 130hp from 1.6 turbo
Sierra Cosworth - 204hp from 2.0 turbo
Golf GTI - 112hp from 1.8
And so on....

Nobody thought these cars were especially slow back then.

Yup, even the 2.8 could only manage 170bhp.

During my ownership my one ate through front suspension parts; CV joints, ball joints, struts; basically every part between the front wheels and gearbox. There's a lot of weight hanging over the front.

They also suffer from dry connections on the dash instruments which can lead to the dash not illuminating and dials failing to read. It means taking the binnacle out to fix but it's not too hard; lower the steering wheel, pop a tea towel over the steering wheel column to catch loose screws and you can have the thing in and out in 30 minutes.

The ignition barrel can go wrong leading to electrical issues such as not starting, no indicators or lights etc. A relatively cheap fix but another bill never the less.

Still a handsome car but I'd want the S2 or quattro models myself.

It's a pretty old school engine, SOHC with 12valves. It's not a good showing when you consider the contemporary Ford 2.5 Duratec had 168bhp, the 2.7 Honda V6 in the Rover 800 managed 167bhp and even Vauxhall managed 168bhp from their 2.5 V6 in the Cavalier.

I did drive something with this Audi 2.6 long long ago and I seem to recall it didn't even make a particularly nice noise?

Yes and when you compare it to similar engines of the time it does seem pretty poor I agree and the fact this one is hindered by an auto as well so I would imagine its not that inspiring to drive, I strangely still lust after them though.

Yeah, I had one (briefly), an estate that a mate had abandoned under the worlds sappiest tree for a year, agreed to sell it for him, never managed to sort the paint fully, it was like rock that sap but I took it thinking I might resurrect the old beast and have it myself.

I had a Mk2 Golf GTI at the time and was thinkingthis was a good step up int he performance stakes, er, no, am guessing there wasnt a lot in it in terms of straight line speed, a quick google confirms 9.3 secs and the Golf was probably about 8.5 but it felt so lethargic in comparison, very disappointing as it sounded lovely, mainly as part of the exhaust was broken but I so wanted it to be good

I should have known, a colleague tried to sell me a pristine Black Audi 100 Avant V6 (same engine) auto in black, it was cheap and looked like new, had been badgering him to give me first refusal on it and he came to sell, I had the money ready and then test drove it, it felt like a hearse, big, black, auto, quiet and made stately progress, couldnt get out of it quick enough, funny as I had been used to my older 100 2 litre 5 cyl and loved it to bits.

I want to love this and whoever buys it need to buy it as it looks nice, it solidly built, has some retro charm and is moderately interesting, but dont buy it thinking its fast, its a decent engine but a proper plodding wheeze o matic, it will move it at acceptable speed but its more about low end torque rather than revs, and to be honest there isnt even that much of that available by modern standards, its more of a quiet dignified engine for cruising rather than any kind of performance offering.

The five cylinder ones in my humble opinion were far better. I thought my old 2 litre 100 was going to be so dull but it was actually pretty spritely, not all that heavy, decent torque, revvy nature and when I remeoved the cat, some quattro soundtrack, quite at odds with the grandad looks, always wanted a 200 Turbo.

Drove a 16 valve coupe one of these when I was about 21, got given it as a rental when expecting a Cavalier/Sierra, was absolutely beside myself as no way could I have ever afforded one, again, not all that fast but at least the 4 cyl engine sounded like it was making an effort.

The difference is the Corrado actually drives quite well.
My boss had one at the time. It would start understeering when he left the business park by Feltham and still be understeering as he passed Hatton Cross.

If this was spanish I'd be making my excuses at work and heading down to pick it up.

I've always liked the look of these. There's a very nice black one that lives near pub a I frequent - always have a bit of a drool over it when I see it. This one looks even better in purple to my eyes.

I usually go more for the way a car drives than looks, but sometimes a car's look just gets under your skin.

Probably just needs new top mounts, easy enough job with a spring compressor.

I have very fond memories of these.

My dad had a brand new 2.8 V6 with the numberplte 'L1P ME'. I remember the solid thunk of the doors and from that point on understood what Germanic build quality was all about. At the time, it was a pretty quick car and certainly looked the part - let's remember how long the Cabriolet stayed in vogue!

We'd go down to Devon every Summer in it, 4 of us kids crammed into the back singing along to Blondie and other '80s classics. As a kid, i also remember the adding to the experience with it's sonorous soundtrack. Good times!

My wife has a 93 Audi 80 2 litre - the engine which was in the 8V Golf GTI at the time. It's a bit heavy so performance is leisurely, but it'll do well over 500 miles on a tank of unleaded (mind you - it's a big tank). I had to do a bit of rust removal and re-painting recently around the wheel arches, but they certainly were made to last. Driving it is like putting on an old pair of slippers.

My old boss had one of these, I couldn't believe how slow it felt & how heavy everything was. Seemed solid though, the doors felt like they weighed a ton. The looks IMO looked dated even back then.

Previously owned an N reg A4 Quattro with this engine. It was surprisingly lively for such a low output. Very thirsty though, and no noise whatsoever.

"Rover V8 - 150hp from 3.5"

In a Saloon car context wrong generation.

Looking at the engine bay, the engine looks longitudinally mounted, yet it's front wheel drive. How does that work?

Always loved that steering wheel. Airbags are essential these days but god, they ruined steering wheel design.

Transaxle bolted to the back of the engine. Everything hangs out in front of the axle.
