Love the look of these. Went through a brief Audi phase when I was younger and had an 80. Not the most exciting of cars, but the quality really was there. It was from a period when Audi was probably seen more as a competitor to Saab/Volvo than BMW/Merc, but they were fighting hard to draw level with the other German brands. Always wanted a coupe, except it it was going to be an S2, then it was the estate in particular that held more appeal for me, although a LHD saloon would be nice for the rarity

Anyone remember the advert with the woman driving off in her Coupe to a cocktail party and leaving her wellies stuck in the mud?

Pro-con ten is one of the reasons we still have the 80 - my wife needs to be very close to almost any car's steering wheel to reach the pedals. If an air bag goes off it would injure her, so in a minor accident she would be worse off. It's all the marketing people's fault. 'Full-size' airbags were designed for Americans who won't wear their seat belts. The smaller ones as on early Mondeos with the smaller airbags were fine, but Vauxhall started saying that their cars had full-size airbags implying they must be better. Audi had to go down the airbag route because no-one knew what Pro-con ten was and people though they wanted airbags - it wasn't a very catchy name was it? (Pro-con ten pulls the pedals and steering wheel out of the way in an impact.)

Looking at the engine bay, the engine looks longitudinally mounted, yet it's front wheel drive. How does that work?
the same way any FWD audi 80, A4, a6, a8 has
Or many old Renaults, Citroens and Saabs, to name a few.

Perhaps it's a sign I'm getting old, but the number of people on here surprised by "only" 150BHP from a 20 year old 2.6 or whatever is alarming. It's called progress - clearly it was deemed enough at the time as Audi sold loads of these (and indeed the manufacturers listed by another poster sold plenty of their own wares). Technology has moved on: 105BHP-115BHP was perfectly sufficient for a good steer in an original XR3i / 205GTI / Golf GTI, nowadays you get more power from a hairdryer.

"Rover V8 - 150hp from 3.5"

In a Saloon car context wrong generation.
The US spec SD1 had a claimed 142bhp, and made quite a lot less in reality! The UK 187bhp engined cars were also rather optimistic.

Always loved the Audi Coupe, prefered the noise of the in-line 5 cylinder engine though. Currently checking the prices of S2s...

Modern cars have a sensor to adjust how the airbag deploys based on seating position

Transaxle bolted to the back of the engine. Everything hangs out in front of the axle.
Most importantly, longitudinal engine shakes the car around its longitudinal centre! biggrin

Yeah, I thought that and I would venture that a modern airbag equipped car will be safer for anyone than a twenty odd year old Audi.

What a lovely colour but handles and drives like an underpowered tank. I too lusted after an S2 back in the day but far too old now. You wouldn't see a current Audi in purple these days, that's for sure.

The reality is the engine needs to be mounted so far forward that it has to be almost the 1st thing that hits in a collision. Other wise pro con 10 won't work.

Crash regulations now mean that you need space in front of the engine (pedestrian safety amongst other things) So airbags were the way to go.

I had one of these for a short while. Built like a tank, went pretty well but the bills, ouch!

Watch out for radiators and PAS pumps as well. I got rid for mine when the exhaust went and it would have cost more to replace than the car was worth. Shame because was a nice car with great looks when it worked.

That looks mega. Find a recent purple Audi in the UK and I'll be doubly impressed.

About the year 2000 most were fitting them and think it became the law after 2006

Not sure if the owner is on here, but he is well known on instagram, as along with this he also owns an R8 and S3 I believe ( If you are on here hope you don't mind me putting up a pic of your motor)

Edit, it seems there are quite a few, including an S3 and a few RS models. Far nicer than boring black or imitation silver that most of them are!

I don't want it even slightly. I've nothing against Audis, I own one and like it very much but that one has nothing going for it whatsoever in my book.

I used to have the 2.0ltr 16v coupe for a couple of years that I bought from a mate. Was an awesome car, but as said above heavy and pretty underpowered. It ate through suspension components but I find myself missing it! The heavy lump made it bullet proof in the snow, and the colour was a ridiculous shade of green/white/blue (dubbed the aquafresh audi by a mate -- https://scontent-ams3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/... )

Was quite happy when I spotted on the MOT check site that it's back on the road smile

I like these a lot. With seeing the original RS4 yesterday, the D2 S8 and now this has reminded me that I always promised myself an Audi at some point, then somewhere in the mid noughties Audi lost it for me and just started churning out posh/corporate VW tdi's which I have no interest in whatsoever. A recent drive in a hired A3 confirmed my thoughts.

Have recently been considering the 2.8 Cab version of one of these to waft around in during the summer.
