RE: Audi Coupe: Shed Of The Week
Discussion
I had the 20v quattro version with the 7A 5-pot engine: It was a lardy unit alright but looked the business and sounded utterly amazing at full-chat.
Wind noise around the sexy pillarless doors was a pain but easily fixed buy packing out the seal. Windscreens are outrageously expensive to replace due to the convoluted fixing method (it's rivetted from outside IIRC and needs lots of trim etc. removing to get at).
Great looker but ultimately disappointing given it was the 'performance' version one rung below the rapid S2 yet it struggled against 80% of modern s***boxes. This and countless niggles did for it in the end. Still looks the dog's danglies with that high waist and split rim speedlines though...

That'll be transverse then.
It would be transverse if they turned a longitudinal engine through 90 degrees, not 180. That said I have no idea what Saaby is on about; that vast, vast majority of FWD cars have transverse engines.180 is where the gearbox diff is up ahead of the engine
These days yes most FWD are transverse, but I was talking about early days

Am I reading that right? 150bhp from a 2.6 V6?
Yep - positively glacial! Even the 2.8 VR6 in the Golf only had 176bhp. It was a lot back then though. These spring to mind:
Sierra XR4i - 150hp from 2.9
Rover V8 - 150hp from 3.5
Escort RS Turbo - 130hp from 1.6 turbo
Sierra Cosworth - 204hp from 2.0 turbo
Golf GTI - 112hp from 1.8
And so on....
Nobody thought these cars were especially slow back then.
In a Saloon car context wrong generation.
The V8 in the SD1 delivered more in the Vitesse versions.

Looking at the engine bay, the engine looks longitudinally mounted, yet it's front wheel drive. How does that work?

These are a total yawnfest, a bit like the current A5 Coupe. The S2 was OK, nothing more, in the same way the S5 is OK, nothing more. For the money give me a Fiat Coupe, Alfa GTV or an E36 Coupe any day of the week unless you have a fetish for shut lines and soft touch plastics.
But it's still around and looking great, most Fiats and Alfas you cite went for scrap a decade ago. A well maintained Audi should last as long a million mile Volvo P1800.I have been looking for a good S2, they seem to be holding their value. A great shape.

I like these a lot. With seeing the original RS4 yesterday, the D2 S8 and now this has reminded me that I always promised myself an Audi at some point, then somewhere in the mid noughties Audi lost it for me and just started churning out posh/corporate VW tdi's which I have no interest in whatsoever. A recent drive in a hired A3 confirmed my thoughts.
Have recently been considering the 2.8 Cab version of one of these to waft around in during the summer.
Get one. I had a late 2.8 Cabrio in Ming Blue with cream leather interior. Had a presence and class about it that equivalent and newer competitors lacked. Not the fastest but fast enough and perfect for wafting in the summer. Boot is surprisingly capable too and it something doesn't fit, chuck it on the rear seats with the roof down.Have recently been considering the 2.8 Cab version of one of these to waft around in during the summer.
Aim for a 1999/S reg or above; they had mild facelift which takes away some of the bluntness of the front end and made the whole car look more current than it really was. The very last officially-named Final Editions came out up until 2001 but these were only 1.8. 2.8's came with a lot of options as standard; full leather, 18" Bolero alloys, electric roof for starters. Other nice little extras to look for are the factory fitted Nokia sub-woofer in the middle of the rear seats behind the armrest. Mine had it - it took me a while to work out where the bass was coming from. For a soft-top the stereo sounded great roof up or down.
Unfortunately a baby came along and I had to get something more practical... a D2 S8 (also great; get one of those as well if you can!)
As soon as the little one is onto booster seats rather than car seats I'd seriously consider getting another 80-based cabrio, they still look lovely as long as they are OEM and aren't sporting horrific Halfords alloys.
IMO these are from the days when an Audi looked like an Audi.

Sat in a 2.6E at a car show as a nipper. I was smitten.

Like the Renault 4 et al. Even then there were quite a few transverse engined cars around, BMC probably made a lot of them though.180 is where the gearbox diff is up ahead of the engine

A guy just around the corner from me has, erm, 1 and a half of these. A dark blue 2.6cab, looks fantastic, a really classy looking thing, lovely.
He also has the rear half of a coupe, I can only imaging it's to make a trailer? It was a whole car at the start of the year...!
I also remember sitting in one at a motor show when I was in my teens, always had a thing for them after that.
