Like both but the M4 would get my vote purely because its offered with a traditional three pedal manual but the AMG`s engine appeals more to me with it being a V8.

I'd take the Mercedes in Estate form.

Would be interesting to see how the mustang gt350 would have fared in this contest.
or, how about the Chevy SS/Holden equivalents?

Always been a BMW fan but mileage has always ruled out an M.

I'd love to try the AMG, always seen them as a bit more brutal but with no experience to back it up.

I find this fake engine noise thing on cars of this class utterly baffling.

On a Corsa VXR or similar maybe but not a flagship car that will be bought by people over the age of 21, its just embarrassing - Its like a premium version of a an ebay fake dump-valve.

I loved the V8 C63 I had a quick go in, it had the mid-section removed from the exhaust (or something similar) and sounded immense - The styling of the new one just doesn't do it for me at the moment though. I have a thing for fast estates and the previous AMG is right at the top of the list.

It sounds like the Merc is a much better car... except for the lack of a manual gearbox so BMW for me. I've no wish to own a "sporty" automatic.

There's just something about the M4 from an aesthetic perspective which doesn't work for me. I think it's the rear quaters.

The M3 is so much better looking. That said at this money neither really appeal to me. I would rather have the new Alfa, when it eventually comes.

£140 for a fking arm rest in your car that was £50k+ to start with. They really must be laughing at their customers.

I'll take an E46 M3 coupé as my weekend toy and a W204 C63 (probably an estate) as my daily driver, thanks... no interest whatsoever in either of these new machines.

Both leave me rather cold but it would be the Merc for me.

I had a C63 Coupe, a disastrous car in all bar looks and noise (both of which were brilliant), a great concept ruined by dreadful build quality and even worse dealers.

I've replaced it with an M4 DCT and to date (as a real life, day to day, car) I am incredibly pleased with it.

I miss the noise of the C63, but for everything else; performance, handling, build quality, etc, the BMW is on a different level + (and even PH'ers have to be realistic sometimes) over 30% better mpg!!

I thought the C63's ride was firm so if this article is suggesting the M4's is worse still, I wonder if I could actually live with one everyday on my local roads. Ride comfort forms a critical part on my choice of cars and I so wanted to own one of these. Maybe i'm just getting old !

Conversely, I much prefer the BMW, albeit not in coupé form. The current styling trends of the Mercedes line up leave me utterly indifferent- CLS aside they all look bizarrely proportioned and terribly chintzy to me.
I’d take the Benz. But as a lifelong Benz lover it pains me to see what Mercedes are, (understandably for money reasons), doing to the range. I agree with your last sentence.

I'd spend an hour at each dealer drinking free coffee and talking technical ..........and then calmly wander off and order a Guilia Quadrifoglio.

For all those banging on about the 'fake' engine noise in the M4/M3, have a read of this http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=...

It's apparently 2-3% electronic, the rest of it is picked up and amplified, go and test drive one, find a tunnel with the windows down and you will hear it !

That's not what the article said! It's all fake. It's sound produced by the computer to mimic the engine and exhaust sounds that would be generated under the throttle and load conditions. Still fake. Just sophisticatedly fake.
