I have a history with 3 CRXs two of which were Vtec, and a 1998 Civic Vtec 4-door I 'get' Honda and their sporadic engineering jewels.
I'm on the brink of buying an open top, budget of £15k
Weekend drives, the odd cross contintent trip.
An 06 S2000 or an 06 987 Boxster 2.7 both with around 40,000 miles
On paper so similar...

Other than a test drive...

Which one is the better bet?

If you've got £15k you can get a Boxster S if you so wish. They have added practicality of 2 boots for long journeys of that matters to you.

True but I didn't want the additional tax, reduced fuel economy, increased insurance cost...servicing etc..all adds up... that's how I saw it..?

In which case they aren't "on paper so similar". If one has much higher running costs (no surprise which) then the question isn't "they seem so similar" but "is the more expensive one worth the difference?"

In addition one's a mid engine, the other a traditional RWD longitudinal 4 sports car, albeit one with a clever cam timing arrangement.

FWIW the Porsche would have a greater sense of occasion to me. In addition, most non petrolheads probably think that an S2000 is an MX5, if you think these things are important.

hmm that crystalises it quite well.

Sense of occasion (badge/heritage) vs sense of occasion (engineering)
I'm not at all interested in 3rd party perception....they can both be labelled hairdressery...but equally both heralded as amazing drivers' cars...

I'm not familiar with the tax situation but expect that to be the same. For servicing it's all the same stuff, after all same car same number of plugs, same air filter. It's sub £300 on tax for my 2000 and 2004 S.

Anything before March 23rd 2006 is £290
After is £490

The older/higher mileage the Boxster the more nervous I am by the RMS IMS stuff that the internet has planted in my head...hence 2006 or later 987... (what forum is best to join to find club owner examples?)

The S2000 has seizing calipers and suspension bush issues to take into account...

I have time to find the one that fits, it's just knowing what to look for in terms of history, paperwork, servicing, private or trade etc

I wouldn't worry about high mileage unless you are planning to do mega miles in it. My first one was 58k to 75k and my current one is 105k to 116k. Both as reliable as each other. Go to boxa.net for a Boxster forum with some owner examples. If you want an over-serviced and mildly modded fast road set up 550 Anniversary then mine is going to be for sale ...

A amazing sports car i currently have a 2009 model i also had a 03 . The 2009 is a much safer car and with traction control is just as safe as any other car .
Its a true sports car that goes like a go cart.
It has the speed. The looks. And the feel.
These car was built for enthusiasts people that love cars and performance. The s2000 is really on its own with its high revving engine and minimalist interior ect. A car with so many awards states it something special. A true classic for sure.

A car has to be pretty bulletproof to take 9000rpm constant
No other manufacturer has a sports car as reliable.

A s2000 is a feel good car that makes you stand out from tge crowd and makes you feel special something japanese sports cars seem to do compared to commom bmws audis mercs ect.

S2000 is the great .

Blimey! old thread resurrected!

I agree though and went with the S2000 over the Boxster, back ini early December 2015
No regrets.
Took it to Monaco GP in 2016, spent a coupe of weeks driving round the Alps
It hasn't missed a beat.
Not sure I could live with the de-cat exhaust day to day, but as a weekend little event....love it to bits

Owned a MY06 since new and just completed 104k. Despite looking around I can't find anything I would rather drive within the category. It's like will never be built again so no wonder prices will rise. New cars now are too fast. You need to travel at speeds that are unsafe on our congested and speed camera ridden roads in order to get any enjoyment out of them and they are so overladen with driver assist systems that you are left feeling a bit of a fraud. Rev-matching, artificial engine noises piped through speakers.... Legislation, technology and overcrowding all conspire to change the face of motoring. I will keep my car for as long as I can.

Sold my 05 moonrock grey with red black interior 9years ago. I loved that car but had to sell it for the arrival of our first child, so he's to blame! Had some great trips in it down to the Italian lakes over the Alps and to the Nurburgring. I will never forget the sound on the autobahn at I seem to remember 162mph max.

Having now waited over 6 months for the electronic module that controls the hood, only to now have Honda now tell me they have in idea when they might become available, I wouldn't ever buy a Honda again.

The most important function of a convertible is the hood. If Honda are not prepared to supply such a minor but critical spare for a hero model, I have no desire to own another of their cars, EVER.

I can get every important part for my old TR7 & 8, long orphaned, but not parts for a 24 years younger Honda.

Sorry Honda, that's a fail.

6 months! Surely you could have got one from a scrappie (lots of S2000's end up in hedges apparently wink) or even shipped the part directly from Japan in that timeframe?

These went out of production 8 years ago and that part is not used on any other Honda.
It was never a "hero/halo" model the NSX was.

There are LOADS of these modules in scrap merchants = 6 on ebay alone at ~£30

Is it REALLY about the roof module? As you say it is actually a minor part
I'd have more concerns over the dwindling supply of F20C engines and seized wishbones

Had 4 S2000's every modern car is better and safer..
Na ever modern car I drive they are fantastic for a couple weeks but soon become a bit boring. So so easy to drive compared to The S, there is a real rawness that no other car exception of a lotus or 7 maybe the 9000rpm is so so addictve.,tge steering perfect track days many behind the wheel European trips plenty of room for two.
Next spring the Honda S2000 will be 20years old and it still keeps chirping away..
