Has anyone ever tried to extract the sound files to hear them independently of the car so you know exactly what the synthetic sound is? A bit like this with the ecoboost mustang:

This video is brilliant! Listen to the guy telling us the sound in the Mustang isnt "fake" and proving that it is fake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9AaFZwfeOU

Sounds like it has a loose baffle or heatshield IMHO.
There's a few videos on YouTube of M4s at cold start and they all seem to make this hideous racket.

I have spent some time with an M4 with the Performance exhaust. It certainly should have been standard fitment.

Also the "fake" noise issue. I'm a sound engineer and part of the problem is that there is a fair bit of latency and phasing issues going on that makes it sound so wrong.

Dan's right, once you notice it you hate it and can't escape it. Having said that they did an ok job in what they tried to do and a fair few peeps wouldn't even notice.

perhaps they should have hired you smile
If they did that they would have ended up with free beer and groupies with every M car standard fit. The solution to all sound problems.

After recommending Dan did this, I finally got round to unplugging my active sound module today. I also unplugged the exhaust flaps (whilst they were open).

The removal of the active sound definitely improves things. I can actually hear the exhaust now without having to wind the windows down. Verdict still out on the flaps as it is sometime useful to engage a little more stealth. So, they may get plugged back in or I might buy a separate valve controller.

I've just been playing around with coding the ASD on my 335d, much easier to use a laptop to turn off the noise than pull your boot to pieces.
I started with the M5/6 file and you get what i describe as a gentle V8 grumble at low revs that does build with revs, but i can only rev to 5.5k so don't get the top end noise. I don't think its very intrusive and does add to the driving experience.
Cropped clip from my dash cam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ0fjMVGmyI&fe...

The M3/4 sound file is a different story, god damn it's loud!! Not sure i could live with it and can see why you'd want it turned off!

Thanks for that, it made me laugh. I wonder why they went for a v8 sound, hell if you're going to use fake engine notes I'll take a straight 12, or a v16.

If as most people who have done the mod are saying, deactivating it actually makes it sound better, I really wonder what thought process was going through their heads that they felt it necessary to add the fake sound?

With my conspiracy hat on I wonder if they are using this as a test bed for when all cars inevitably go electric\silent and they HAVE to add in fake sound to keep us ICE luddites happy.

Picked car up from dealer yesterday (fixing a rattle in the door) and they'd plugged the ASD module back in! Was throwing a fault code apparently.

It sounded more terrible than I remembered. Good news is it only took a couple of minutes to unplug it again now I know the drill smile

They have also replugged the exhaust flaps. I am going to leave them for now, might buy one of those remote controller thingys.
