Looking at the price of these now I find myself asking would I take a base model PDK Carrera over a GT-R, they are almost same price.

Just read this and the Autocar version - pretty similar conclusions. But is the simple point that this car is not as fun as its predecessor?! I do have a vested interest in this statement being brought out into the open admittedly. But should people switch from a 458 into a 488, E92 M3 into an M4, 991.1 into 991.2 or, if you are not fussed about the age of your car, that you should keep what you have because its better? Of course, I think the articles do say that if you are just buying a brand new Fezza or Porker, these are still great cars worth having.
...and that is why I am keeping my 996 turbo which I've had for 12 years now. With a few tweaks (insurance-approved suspensions/exhaust/ECU upgrades)no newer version or any other car has been worthy of an upgrade for my needs (4 seats) and wishes: autobahn fast, alpine pass agile and a few track days. Sweeter still...the value of my car is going up!. Actually, the more boring newer models become, the faster the value of my car increases, so please guys keep going. At this pace by the time my car changes owner it will be subject to inheritance tax!

I think i'll stick with my 997. I'd take the Lotus over this if I were in the market for a new car.

"up a closed mountain road in a PDK Carrera Cabriolet - not exactly the PH choice, granted...."

No, today's PH forum fan would be waddling up the mountain in their Evoque convertible! smile

and therein lies Lotus' problem. They need to get your 991 owner friends to consider it. Name me another 2+2 sports car in that 70k+ bracket with the engine behind the driver.
Or to put it another way, nobody wants a 2+2 sports car with the engine behind the driver unless it's a 911. Porsche only get away with the 911 because it's been a "classic" design evolved over many decades. Ferrari's attempts fell flat on their face and then just to prove they weren't paying attention Lotus jumped in with both feet to show they could cock it up as well. Neither GM nor Toyota were ever daft enough to try.

Porsche haven't messed it up, it has moved forward where it needs to and yes (as always) lost a little character:
  • EPAS, the best there is
  • Torque, power and MPG/CO2 emissions all improved
  • More modern interior with 918 Spyder inspire steering wheel
  • Up dated infotainment (I hate that term!) system
So in every (very McLaren) measurable way the new 991.2 is a better car.

From EVO's video even on the standard exhaust its still sounds great (not as good as an aircooled 911, I agree) and from Richard Meaden's column in this month's EVO explaining why Porsche have won so may EVO car of the year awards - the consistency of the feel of all the controls and that it feels special at any speed (not just full throttle up shifts & the like) will still be present.

If you want an old 911 - buy an old 911.

I still want one - just wish I had the money for one

Having owned plenty of both turbo and N/A cars, i definitely prefer N/A cannot see this as progress either, recently sold RS6 which despite being a great car and very quick it was not much fun to drive no feeling !. Thats exactly why i am preserving in the garage Merc a 6.3 SLS the best sound track around, My Lotus Evora 400 does not feel supercharged and god thats a good car and quicker than both these cars in manual form. When the wife comes to change her Porsche i will try and get her a low mileage N/A 911. For Porsche owners it will keep residual values of the N/A cars up i guess.

Mr Porsche isn't going to turn back the clock. The world moves on, leaving a small handful of Victor Meldrews to rant pointlessly about how it's all gone to the dogs.

Meanwhile we're out enjoying our excellent modern Porsches. driving

Depends what he means by "modern". The 996/986 and 997/987 cars are good fun. The 991.1/981...hmmmm...mixed feelings from me. The upcoming turbo cars...no ambivalence there. You can tell even from the largely positive reviews that they are turds.

Sounds pretty good to me. It's a shame they've lost NA however it still has the howl.

It did sound rather like the typical "you haven't driven it so you can't comment" sort of post you see a lot on Pistonheads. hehe

No howl to my ears. It sounds like a muted and flattened version of the normal DFI flat 6 sound. Less crescendo and a whole lot less mechanical noise. Catchpole has lost the plot when he says it sounds more like an aircooled Porsche because it is "softer" - the aircooled cars have a far more mechanical noise to them. The 991/981 major more on farty noise.

I bet you can count your friends on the thumb of one hand, in the mirror.

Meanwhile, the rest of us can enjoy this latest sportscar from Porsche. If it's a further step up from the 2012 Carrera which I drove it will be absolutely brilliant. driving

I only ever seem to notice your posts on Lotus threads, posting like an old grump about how st Lotus are (partly because you're too old get in and out of their cars) and how great new Porsches are.

Porsche's current cars are not without their drawbacks, especially for people who like some tactility in their driving experience. Some Porsche owners are so defensive about that fact.

Does anyone know whether the 991.2 GT3 will be going turbocharged or will it stand alone as a naturally aspirated engine in the 911 range?

Talk from Porsche has been that it will remain NA. It will be pretty strange to have a GT3 that is no faster than the GTS, but people will have to adjust expectations.
