RE: Porsche Macan GTS: Driven
Discussion
Yep, am interested in the F-Pace. It looks a nice car and I'm sure will handle very well. The new Disco Sport would have been interesting too, except the gearbox is very vanilla and the 2.2 derv engine feels very old-tech. Sort the suspension and stick a nice 3.0 V6 Petrol engine in a Disco Sport and it could maybe compete with the Macan, but I guess a fruity Disco Sport would/could take market share from the F-Pace, hence why they've lumbered it with a french diesel engine??

I have no idea how anyone could describe the Macan as big enough for a family.
Simple - I drive one, and I have a family, we use this as our family car. Therefore I am qualified to state this opinion.Doesn't make it a sensibly size family car

As a family car, what does it do that a decent estate wouldn't?
Hold it's value. Seriously, this was a primary concern when we were looking at all options. It works out far cheaper to own a Macan than an A6 wagon, or an X5, or any RR product. Don't even start on AMG future values! In fact, it costs less in real terms than anything else in the market.
In the real world, future values are massively important to the average punter.
Why is it that car have to look more aggressive than beautiful these days. It seems that they think that everyone want to be a gansta in Reigate. Judging by car fashion it seems that the M25 fantasy is to be a wannabee GTA criminal in our AMG, S-line, GTS etc. whilst going 15mph listening to radio 2 or 4 on the way to giving a PowerPoint presentation on copier paper. Daft. Lets bring back beauty and colour.

Yep. But you could do the same with a Ford Fiesta.

I give up!! I would not describe a Fiesta as a family car. A Macan is. How big a car do you need for Christs sake..?? I have 2 kids, not 5 of the buggers! Doesn't make it a sensibly size family car

I like the Macan but love the idea of a small Porsche Saloon

If the Mac's at least that big I completely see how it would be a great family car size-wise.
Families of 4 seemed to manage fine with smaller cars years ago, it's only recently that single moms etc have started driving around in 7-seat buses
I don't really like SUVs, but I do quite like the Macan.
I am waiting for a fully electric Macan, not hybrid but fully electric. I want Porsche to take on Tesla, if they have the money and the guts to do it!?
I think SUVs need to be battery powered for the reason you mention - they are too heavy to run on petrol engines. Plus diesel engines are totally over IMO.

Surely the current version has the JLR 2.0 diesel? Unless Wolverhampton has recently been annexed, I'm pretty sure it's not French. The F-Pace will also be fitted with that engine, if the white one I saw the other day with '2.0d AWD' badges on the back was to be believed.matrignano said:
Might be daft question, but why don't they use the Flat 6s from the Boxter/Cayman/991 instead of a Macan-specific V6, albeit probably stolen from somewhere else in the VAG Group?
Mounting a flat 6 in a platform that was designed for "regular" V6/V8 engines would be a massive headache and extremely expensive. They would have to redesign the whole body in white which would largely defeat the purpose of having a platform model. Then there are other issues like the power delivery of the engines not being suited to the size and weight of the car, questionable ground clearance unless you mount the whole engine higher up which would hurt the centre of gravity, etc.

I've currently got a C63 and wanted to replace it with something reasonable fast with four doors, something that sounded nice and something that doesn't rattle my spine on every journey. I looked at quite a few different options, I considerd the F-Pace but I'm wary of the residuals on the V6 petrol, I don't really like diesels, which really limited my choice. I'm looking at a 9 ish month wait which is a bit of a bummer.

Are they bigger inside than a VW Tiguan?

Yep - we had a Tig R-line for 4 yrs as the family car before the Macan. The Mac is bigger than the Tig, esp the boot. Rear headroom might be a little less, as the Mac has that sloping silhouete and is not as boxy as the Tig. Still plenty of headroom though, although the full glass roof helps to brighten the interior and gives a greater sense of space My colleague had a Tig for a year or so through work, and it managed perfectly at driving 3 of us with surveying equipment around work sites, just as well as it did ferrying his wife, child and baby and all their luggage down to the south coast twice a year.

My mistake - when I looked at the Disco Sport this summer it was only available with the old 2.2 derv unit. The new engine was due for release this autumn but no-one had driven one at that point. TBH though, for the price differential (which wasn't that much) and the slower depreciation of the Macan, for the money I'd rather have a decent V6 and PDK over a 4-pot and auto.No way the Disco could compare to the driving experience of the Macan
