for the money I'd rather have a decent V6 and PDK over a 4-pot and auto.

No way the Disco could compare to the driving experience of the Macan
I agree. If you hate the idea of any 4 pot diesel (as I do), you want a reasonably sized car for normal family use (so Q7 / X5 / Touareg / Disco are all too big), you want good residuals, and a raised driving position..........it's the BMW X3 (six cyl), Audi Q5 (six cyl) Macan or the F Pace, as far as I can see. And if it must be petrol; only the last two. Have I forgotten any other candidates?

"Fully fledged off roader"? I'd like to see one drive up a damp grassy field with 265 and 295 section rubber!
Yup, a silly bit of text:

'The driving position is great, aiding that impression that you're driving a bigger hatch rather than a fully-fledged off roader.'

These types of car have nothing to do with off-roading. They are road cars. Either born from the hatchback concept or the estate car depending on size.

We have reached the point in the evolution of this sector that it is absolutely moronic to compare them to off-roaders which although have a similar shape are today a completely different and separate market niche.
Yep, that doesn't read too nicely! I'll have a little amend now... nerd

I had the chance to see and sit in (but not drive) the F-Pace the other day. It was the German spec LHD car exhibited at the recent Frankfurt show; in a very nice caesium blue reserved for the 1st Edition model. The interior was, I thought, very nicely done with decent space for rear seat passengers. The wheelbase is 2,874 mm (113 inches) - remember the original Range Rover was only a 100 inch wheelbase. The suspension is double wishbone at the front and integral link at the rear, a combination that has already delivered both excellent handling and good packaging advantages on other new JLR products (XE, XF, Discovery Sport). It should do well.

I have no idea how anyone could describe the Macan as big enough for a family.
Simple - I drive one, and I have a family, we use this as our family car. Therefore I am qualified to state this opinion.
Some magicians wear straight jackets under water. Doesnt mean families want to do that though. Simple...

The gospel according to Richyd...

ETA: and if this isnt clear enough, what my comment means, is that just because you do something, doesnt make it right. I personally think these overladen barges are a waste of space. Why 2 tonnes, with limited space? What a joke. In any case, there are plenty of cars I'd rather drive, so I'll just leave you to it.

A lot of people consider a Ford Focus to be a "family car". It really depends on how big your family is, and how much stuff you want to transport. I remember my parents packing 4 kids, luggage, and a fat labrador 100 miles into a much less spacious Triumph Dolomite 1850 when we went on summer holidays.

Seeing the Porsche Macan on the road I reckon it looks great. Actually much better than the Cayenne, and really more Porsche in spirit. This GTS will tick a lot of boxes for well off couple with 2 small children.

That's an interesting observation, the Macan does look a lot more sporty than the Cayenne.

Re the family car bit, I've no idea why people are saying its of no use as a family car as it very clearly has more than enough space. It is just that like other family cars with the same amount of space it is not suitable for families with more than two children or who carry around far more kit than is ever needed.

Yep, am interested in the F-Pace. It looks a nice car and I'm sure will handle very well. The new Disco Sport would have been interesting too, except the gearbox is very vanilla and the 2.2 derv engine feels very old-tech. Sort the suspension and stick a nice 3.0 V6 Petrol engine in a Disco Sport and it could maybe compete with the Macan, but I guess a fruity Disco Sport would/could take market share from the F-Pace, hence why they've lumbered it with a french diesel engine??
Disco sport now has Ingenium JLR 2.0 diesel rather than 2.2 lumps, still transverse though so no chance of a V6!
