These are great cars. I still have very fond memories of mine.
ABS was not missed at all, but I tend to adapt to conditions and not drive up peoples rear. I deliberately locked the wheels a few times in safe conditions to calibrate the limits and it was very well behaved when sliding.
The only thing that I didn't like was the floatiness at high speed. If there was a little aero to get the air cushion out from underneath...

I was looking for shopping car for her indoors a few years ago, a 172 was for sale nearby so had a look. I was surprised how quick it felt but the history was non existent so passed on it. I looked at 3 or 4 others and they all turned up dodgy history and had been hammered. A straight one now must be a rare find.
Had mine for just over a year now. Don't use it for commuting so it just comes out the garage for fun at the weekends and when the wife takes the family barge somewhere. The suspension isn't as good as the 182 Trophy I had in 2006-2008 but it's noticeably lighter, the lack of TC and ABS is brilliant on trackdays and the engine is just as strong. The seats are absolute rubbish but at least they're light. Going to put a couple of nice buckets or maybe Recaro Trendlines (Trophy seats) in I think.
Funnily enough when I was looking for a fun hot hatch last year I very nearly bought a 106 Rallye (S1) but after lots of research went back to a RS Clio as needed something a bit newer and hopefully more reliable. It's been faultless so far with just the airbag/service light coming on every time the passenger seat gets moved (a bit of fiddling with the connector sorts this) and a recurring slow flat caused by corrosion around the bead of the tyre (the wheels need a refurb). Oh and a sticky brake calliper after 6 hours of lapping Brands last spring. Doesn't use a drop of oil and I can get my mountain bike in it without taking the wheels off. Fantastic little car, I'm never selling it.

Picked mine up in June this year. Always had a hankering and when I needed a cheap / fun second car then it was a no brainer.
If you have any inclination to try one then you must - it will be better that you imagined.
As has been said, a quick suspension refresh, good tyres and geo and these things are incredible fun. Clio Sport has a great marketplace too where you can pick up a variety of parts for buttons.
There is a reason why so many are used to race, hill climb, rally etc and why many exotica owners have one for B road blasts.
