As the title says. Which cars gain the most power and torque through a simple remap?

I'll start by saying that my Volvo C30 D5 went from 180bhp to 230bhp and from 370Nm to 460Nm of torque.

Saab 95 2.0t. Goes from 150hp to 225hp/340NM with a stage 1 remap. Add an exhaust down pipe and it will go to 300hp.

A mate just got a Mercedes c220 cdi.

A quick Google suggests they are exactly the same as a c250 apart from the map. So it will go from 170 to 260bhp,and to 600nm (not sure on std). That looks like one hell of a jump.

Typically at best you're looking at 20% for a turbo petrol or maybe a bit more for a turbo diesel.

If you want stuff that is more than that in percentage terms it's usually stuff where either the exact same engine is offered in several states of tune and you're remapping the lowest state of tune.

In terms of sheer BHP added then it's usually an engine that is very powerful anyway so that 20% gain works out to a ridiculous figure. I know stuff like the current S6 4.0TFSI gets a pretty big headline figure when remapped.

VW engines tend to show pretty big gains too because VW love under rating them. The Golf Mk7 GTI, if you compare VWs given figure to what it dynos at after a remap is pretty big, but the figure it dynos at before a remap vs the after figure is less of a difference.

D5s in all their forms take it well. Ours, were we minded, could go from 163 to north of 200bhp with accompanying substantial torque increases.

Unless it's been a rolling road, before and after, then the figures are meaningless. I.e. Who is quoting the figures, the guy charging for the remap?

Good point. Depends on the size of the engine too. RS6 goes from 572hp to 700hp with a remap.

Bloody hell that's impressive! At what point do you have to start thinking about clutches / gearboxes etc?

My 993 gained 48bhp. Saying that the guy found a varioram issue which was actually costing me about 33bhp under the claimed fugure so the 15bhp remap gain felt even better than I'd hoped :-)

I have read that certain BMW's share the same hardware but leave the factory with different levels of tune.

So a 325i can be mapped as a 328i and therefore go from 185bhp to 285bhp very easily.

Are there any other examples of this kind of thing?

Performance Torque posted this on their Facebook page.

"BMW F30 320i custom mapped from 179hp to 283hp. We also offer a 245hp upgrade option for customers wanting to match the higher power 328i factory version. "

225hp is fine and best part is the mid-range which makes overtaking diesel Audis fun. 300hp is about the limit of the pistons. Earlier engines were more robust and almost 500hp could be made on stock internals. Not bad for a 2.0 L 4-pot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW-z__-OcOw

Doesn't it depend how long you want the powertrain to last?

See my reply above/below.

Merc 220cdi are identical to the 250cdi apart from the map so 170->260bhp is possible. As far as I can tell anyway.
