Also aren't the exhaust tips some EU ruling about the tips not allowed to get too hot hence the exhaust not actually being connected to the tail pipe tips in many cars now - the new Lambos springs to mind?
Funny you should pick that marque, the Miura had false exhaust tips W124 said:
I sometimes wonder if the 1.8 petrol unit is the ultimate smoking gun for the VW group. Unless they knew the diesels and over complex petrol units were dodgy, why go back to basics as they have with this?
Well they admitted the 1.4 twincharged TSI wasn't great by retiring it. It was probably expensive to produce, but the serious reliability issues probably helped kill it off. That didn't stop it winning an award for innovation (Lancia didn't answer the phone before them). Why they didn't go for a conventional engine design like the relatively reliable TFSi I don't know. It's not like it's hard to get 180ps out of a very conventional 1.4 turbo. Sometimes I think VAG has basically done projects just because it has so much cash in the bank! Why the heck did they buy Ducati for example? WTF was the point of the Phaeton? What was the point of the 5.0 V10 TDI? The Veyron I can understand, as they are slowly building the Bugatti brand up over a decade, before a big cash grab from millionaires and billionaires.wst said:

Actually I've always believed, and you can laugh at me if you want, that whoever designed the Ibiza Cupra/FR liked the Murcielago. If you look at the design of the car and some of the little details in the interior and exterior, someone put some of the easy to copy details from that onto the Ibiza.I have a pre-facelift 2012 Ibiza sportrider with the 1.2 TSI engine. Despite being much slower in a straight line than my previous car, it is a lot more fun to drive. The steering is very sharp and precise and I find myself driving much more enthusiastically than I used to.

Well spotted. It was the same chap who designed both. Luc Donckerwolke. In my opinion, Seat really need to redo the FR and Cupra diesels (especially if Skoda aren't going to do a diesel VRS Fabia).
My 10 year old FR has 130bhp (factory figure) but the highest output diesel from the factory is now only 105bhp, a whole 5bhp more than the 3rd highest diesel in the range of 10 years ago. The Cupra diesels had 160bhp!
Update those to the 150bhp and 185bhp units found in models like the A3, add XDS for the higher power Cupra diesel and sell them faster than you can make them.
That said, a Cupra R with this engine tuned up to ~225bhp (number plucked from old 1.8T VAG engines for nostalgia) - the same power as the Leon Cupra R had 10 years ago! - could be a real weapon if embellished with the right options from the VAG group.

Funny that you say that, they actually have the same designer:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luc_Donckerwolke

Haha I had no idea. So not design plagiarism but design preference!
Yep . He's done a few things I really like -- his Lambos still look good 10+ years on, so clean, mean and unfuzzy. The last pre silly frame grill Avant A4, nicely minimalist and un-shouty. Better than most of what came out of the brand afterwards IMVHO. And of course the avantgarde A2. Ironically, I haven't quite warmed to the Ibiza yet. Definitely one of the better looking super minis for me, but something about the width/length I can't put my finger on.
The guy is now off from Bentley to Hyundai/Genensis now. Will be interesting to see what he can do there with Mr. Schreyer.

It's always struck me as odd that so many people complain about fake exhaust tips yet are quite happy with all the other styling accessories that pretend to be something they're not like various "diffusers", fake vents, non-functional wings, etc.
Yep, fully agree. The Ibiza has it's own share of that sillines that annoys me a lot more than the exhaust. But it is extremely difficult to find anything remotely current without such fakery. Crassest probably current MB products?
