So I was abruptly awoken this morning by the sound of a large bang. The bin men backed his lorry down our lane and smashed into the rear of my 03 C class. The damage doesn't look the worst however I feel like it may be a write off seeing it's value when bought was only £2500.

Now for the more exciting bit! I may now need a new car within the coming days, however my mind has now gone blank of every car I know, not sure if that's because I'm still hungover. My basic requirements are:

- Manual
- Engaging drive
- Returns around the 30mpg mark on a steady run
- Top of budget of 4k

I'm also a fan of saloons and not so much a fan of hatchbacks so that's something to bare in mind.

Any suggestions would greatly help; after owning the Mercedes I want something that's a bit more engaging but not so raw that I'm going to dread the 4am commute in the mornings over winter frown

Or cloth seats.

OP - you can have my E91 325i, though it is an estate. It meets all of your needs.

Check that auto box though, they can be a bit troublesome. Easy enough to spot, move from park to drive and see if it takes a while to engage

I was considering one, my friend has the 2.5 petrol turbo, it's an 02 and they look lovely inside. They handle well for a big old lump? Any concerning problems with them?

Just how is a BMW going to be good in the 4am winter commutes... like the Merc they struggle to move on anything thats remotely cold ground!

The auto boxes are probably the biggest concern, speak with the seller about it and ask them what problems they've had if any. 'Never had a problem' might mean they're ignoring one

Check it idles steady and pull the dipstick out while it's running to see if there's any air bubbles on it. It's a sign that the o ring seals on the dipstick tube are failing

st.

I wish someone had told me that sooner or I never would've driven the three I've owned over the last ten years in these type of conditions.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to sell mine post haste now I know it will struggle to move on remotely cold ground.

The Mondeo 2.5T would probably be a more engaging drive. It is however a hatchback and fscking huge and not available in AWD like the Volvo. Mid 30's easily on a run (which the Auto AWD Volvo 2.5T does not do).
