Changing tyres at 3/4mm? Bonkers.

That's like pouring out a bottle of wine half way through and opening another one for the sake of it.

1.6/2mm for me and i've never had an issue with grip on the roads...and i stay in Scotland!

As far as I'm aware, there's nowhere with a 3mm legal limit. Some manufacturers like to put wear bars at 3mm to encourage you to change your tyres early.
Austria has a wear limit of 4mm on winter tyres, which are obligatory in slush, snow and ice!

I reckon some people would run their tyres down to the canvas if it were legal.

Some people do despite the fact that it's not!

I think it's quite common to have a higher limit on winters in countries where winters are a requirement.

Two extremes for me, either when the car starts to feel a bit "lively" at 30mph or and this is more often the case, if it's got a puncture\nail\kerb damage on it. Unfortunately this usually seems to occur very soon after I've just changed them, I LOVE paying for new tyres twice!

How long they last is irrelevant. You could have done 500 miles or 50,000 miles in 10 months.
About 11,000 miles frown

On my daily I'll go down to the wear bars, sorry if that offends anyone but I see the legal limit as exactly that. On my weekenders I'll replace at four years regardless of mileage and usually ebay the old ones if not damaged or puncture repaired.
Also when I buy a car if its fitted with cheap tyres I'll replace them at the soonest opportunity whatever amount of tread they have, and again ebay what's been removed if in sensible condition.

I picked up an MOT advisory last week on rear tyres near limit. Just checked them before pricing up replacements, they're at 4-5mm! Seems like my mot place has a very cautious view on when tyres should be changed...

Did the MOT station sell tyres by chance?

Does your MOT garage sell tyres by any chance? This is usually the kind of thing I get when I take my car in for an MOT or service. Sir your tyres\brakes are dangerous, do you want us to replace them?

Surprisingly, no!

It also picked up an advisory on front suspension bushes (which I was expecting), and whilst its the kind of job they do, they didn't try to "upsell" it on me; they just told me about it when I went to pay and pick up the keys.

Strange. I had made a post on here before about it but merc gave me an advisory for rear tyres at just under 4.5mm, i could see their incentive for doing so though of course.

That's about how long the rears on my XF lasted. Rejoice - anyone getting 25k from tyres can't be having a lot of fun!

I don't take tyres off until they're lower than 2mm unless they're old or just rubbish tyres. Tyres are horrible to dispose of if you have any kind of environmental conscience and I don't like waste. I don't like wasting money either. I don't recall ever finding myself in the situation where the extra performance from having a little more tread depth would've made any difference.

People complaining about puddles need to observe and anticipate better and, to bring out an old PH cliche, 'drive to the conditions'- not only the road conditions, but the condition of the vehicle.
