So, he flashed you, even though you had nowhere to move left into, and he could have overtaken clearly in lane 4? scratchchin Didn't think so!

If you're implying that you/other PH'ers have never seen a driver tailgate someone else and try and p*ss them off when they could have overtaken then I'm not sure what to say to you. It seems like you're on a bit of a stint here to prove that I am a terrible driver and I should be off the roads because how dare I sit in the 3rd Lane for longer than 5 minutes!!!!!1!£213

Lol, I think PH is the only forum where this thread will turn into a debate about my driving skills??

Have none of you been on the M25 during peak rush hour time? The 1st lane is empty, the 2nd lane is hogged by lorries driving at about 50ish, the third and fourth lane are your general cruisers, I was in the 3rd Lane because I had just overtaken someone else and the 2nd lane to my left had a big old coach in it. So no, I couldnt move over smile If you read the thread again, as soon as I COULD move over, I did, to let the dumbass Astravan driver through.

Judging by the comments on this, I assume you people that posted telling me how to drive sit in the 1st lane going at 50mph all day everyday yep?
FTFY smile

I'd love to be able to sit at 50mph on the M25 at peak time - it's more like 20mph whenever I'm using it, and the fastest/smoothest lane seems to be L1.

I do 40k a year and a good chunk of that is on the M25.
Can't say I ever find much of a problem.

You do find an awful lot of COCKS doing 65 in L3 because they don't know how 4 lane motorways work.

doing 70ish mph if you read the OPs first post. so doing close to the national speed limit overtaking in L3 then pulling over to L2. God forbid it was maybe raining, windy, or the M25 plain old congested and the OP was driving in accordance to the conditions.

OP you have my sympathies for the pish posted on here after you took the time to post an amusing story on the General pedantry forum.

I'm off to sit in L3 at 50mph for the next hour and annoy astra vans

Excellent! Thanks biggrin - People seem to have the highway code glued to their b***ocks on here and all drive in accordance to the law by the book! It was meant to be a humorous story to brighten up a crappy Wednesday afternoon but lo behold the PH police came along.

You can joke about PH police all you like, but whilst the OP's story is an amusing karma tale, if there was room to move over, he shouldn't have been in lane 3, end of! If more people spent time paying attention to their own driving rather than focusing on how nobody else could ever be in such a hurry as to want to go faster than them then the motorways would be a much more pleasant place to drive.
AyBee said:
What's that phrase? Oh yes, keep left when not overtaking? It makes fk all difference which lane you're in, if there's room in the lane to your left, that's where you should be.
Yes, all of this.

The Astra van man was obviously the biggest dick in this tale, but I can understand the frustration of people hogging lanes when you're in a hurry.

Unfortunately, I don't think that the OP has helped himself when he said
OP said:
To avoid an incident, I pulled to the left lane and carried on pootling along.
and this is what some of the keep left advocates have latched onto.

And of course all the critics on here (and self styled driving police - maybe they're in the wrong career?) have never sat in a lane a little longer than someone else has? And of course none of them would do anything illegal like tailgate or pass on the left or heaven forbid exceed the speed limit?
My only comment would be that unless you can hand on heart say you never break the law when driving STFU.

OP - Brilliant piece of Karma. There is NEVER an excuse for tailgating or putting other people at risk. Nice one that he was pulled.

Drive in the left hand lane and you probably won't irritate anyone by dawdling in an overtaking lane when someone wants to go faster than you.

It's nothing to do with legality. People sitting in the wrong lane cause congestion, danger and irritation. If the OP was in the wrong lane, then it is perfectly easy to see why a guy in a van who may well be interested in cars and driving would perhaps, in the right circumstances, lose his temper with a less able driver who perhaps can't follow a rule as simple as 'keep left unless overtaking'.

If people are going to drive in a manner which irritates others, they can hardly be surprised when others become irritated.
If we're in the cinema and I sit in the theatre kicking the back of your seat, I can hardly be surprised when you turn round and punch my teeth down my throat.

I've posted today that it takes two idiots to make an incident. This situation would seem to bear that out. If it turns out that the OP has phrased his post loosely and was, in fact, overtaking when the van appeared behind, then this does not apply here. If not, perhaps there are lessons to be learned all round?

Except he's already stated that he pulled over to the left and carried on pootling. So, by his own admission, he was pootling in lane 3 with space to the left to move into. If he'd done that originally, said van could have continued on his path without getting agitated. How many times do you see people flashing cars to move over when there isn't room to do so and when the other option is for them to move right and overtake? I'd have done the same as the van in this situation and yet, it's the van that gets pulled and the OP goes on his way thinking that his driving is fine...

One of the main reasons our motorways are crowded is because people essentially narrow the available road space (since we can't overtake on both sides) with their poor road positioning, oblivious that they're in the wrong (the OP).
OP was in L3, L4 was free.

Driving in the wrong lane does not cause danger. The danger is caused by people so caught up in their own self importance that they just have to get past immediately and because of that do something stupid and dangerous. Ten seconds in the wrong lane? Big deal. Thirty seconds? So what? 5 minutes? Then fair enough - that's heading towards inconsiderate unless there is good cause but still not justfication to tailgate or flash not just the driver they passed but the next one as well. As has been stated in the OPs posts - he was in L3 on a 4 lane motorway, passing something in L2. HTF was that being in the wrong lane and hanging about in the wrong lane. And even if it was, so what? Oh hang on... this is PH where everyone is a perfect driver. The same perfect drivers who think it ok to pass on the left, tailgate and do over the ton on the motorways. In the scheme of things failing to move left immediately is a pretty minor indiscretion and not in itself dangerous - especially if reasonable progress is being made.

Agreed but thats more an issue with the person getting irritated. Its not dangerous per se.

Which was not happening in this particular case. Bottom line is the cop agreed with the OP that the van driver was being a prick.
