RE: Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport: Driven
Discussion
These cars (GTI, R, RS etc. ) are all fast and more capable than almost all owners will need or ever discover.
If a small minority want a really "hardcore" car then surely buy a GTI or similar that is a few years old, strip it out and upgrade parts to suit?
I'd quite like to do it (although would choose a less powerful, smaller car), but It wouldn't be a pleasant (or aspirational looking) ride to the Trafford Centre/other uber-mall or motorway crawl commute which is where most cars appear to be used fairly exclusively these days.

Has anyone driven the Focus RS yet though ? I am sure it's very good despite 4wd but no one has driven it presumably ?
They want to hope it's actually good because it's being hyped beyond belief round here. A car that no-one has driven, not even any of the motoring press making cars irrelevant. Could be some red faces round here How many versions of the GTI do VW think we need, when the Golf R does it all so well?
You want 3 doors and manual, the R provides and doesn't limit your 296 horses to short bursts.
Fully stripped out track version to beat the Leon Sub8 would have made more sense to restore VW Group hierarchy

Those are Audi's RS bucket seats as fitted as an option to RS4's old shape R8's TTRS and RS3's - They were about a £2.5k option on the B8 RS4, so I suspect they'll be similarly priced on this golf, no ?
Also, very steal-able, so make sure you get one with a good alarm

Those seats were also available as an option on the Mk5 GTI. They are fantastic. Also, very steal-able, so make sure you get one with a good alarm

Could be some red faces round here it might be a slight disappointment in terms of the clubsport moniker ,but all standard hot hatch type cars are crap with any serious track use. it kills them in no time .look at the extra work the various manufacturers put into the cars they take to the ring for setting lap times.stripping this out, making it a bit lighter with a roll cage would still be another marketing exercise.
it is a nice car that will sell well and do what the majority of owners ask of it.

Revo Golf Mk7R running 420 DSG big brakes sticky rubber and I believe Ohlins was 1.5 seconds off touring car pace at Donnington and can easily driven home. Only fly in the ointment was the DSG box overheats and gets 'grumpy'!
Will be good when VW get rid of the pesky and somewhat problematic IHI turbo. They should have stuck with Borg Warner K04 item.

Spot on.....most will never get anywhere near their limits....car or driver! If a small minority want a really "hardcore" car then surely buy a GTI or similar that is a few years old, strip it out and upgrade parts to suit?

Still a very nice car for many. I think as we get older and our requirements change when little ones arrive etc and this is where VW get it just about right with the overall package.
I'd like to see how the new RS shapes up as an everyday car.

so here we are in the second week of February and still no sign of this being launched in the UK. It became available in Germany a couple of weeks back, so whats the hold up.
Also, the German market is only getting the DSG, no manual option; I hope this isn't the case for the UK. I want to make a decision about a new car, but need to see what the standard spec/options are on this, so come on VW, please!

Yep I see statements like that quite often on here and can't really understand them. Gearboxes in the 70's and early 80's were "horrible" so that it was almost a requirement to rev-match or double de-clutch to get it to actually go into gear reliably, compared to that modern gearboxes are an engineering marvel.
Yes obviously some feel better than others but I haven't driven a car in the last decade or more where I'd describe the gearbox as horrible. I'm either getting too old or people have been a bit spoilt these days.
For what it's worth I currently drive a car with a DSG and I wouldn't have another, especially in something with hot hatch or "Clubsport" pretensions.
