Mazda CX-7, OK not a true 4x4 as such, but it looks great, goes fast (the 2.3 turbo petrol will anyway) and it's very exclusive. I can only recall seeing one in the past year at least! In budget too!

It's not an auto though.

Consider getting an LPG if getting a large 4x4. I've had a few and it makes that 18mpg into 35mpg or there abouts.

Volvos are great cars, I have an older V70, but XCs of a certain age have massive transmission problems. Avoid avoid avoid.

I am looking for a 4x4 under £5k which is generally reliable, 5 doors and STYLISH. It has to be good on road as well as off but I'm no green laner !.. and I only do about 5,000 miles a year max.

I have a local mechanic who has looked after my cars for over 10 years so no dealer prices for repairs etc..

Having a look through forums I think I have made a final list ( although I'm sure people will disagree )

Subaru Outback 2.5 SE
Volvo XC90 2.4 TD D5
Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRTD
Mercedes-Benz M Class 2.7 ML270 CDI
Mitsubishi Outalnder 2.0D or 2.4Sport

Any comments or OTHER suggestions
Why would you want to take something STYLISH regularly off-road?
Even if it's stylish to begin with it wont stay that way for long, no?

It must be good off road but you then say your not doing green lanes ?

What exactly do you want to do then? Just have something to get thru floods/snow if they happen?

Seriously - who specs white leather in an SUV.
Surely even the orange skin brigade would worry about turning the leather... well... orange!?

Look at photo 15. Love the fact it has a good 1/8th tank of fuel....but the computer is saying it only has a range of 81 miles hehe

Kia Sorento if you want a proper 4x4 - not great to drive fast but well built - Merc Diesel engine - I bought one for £2k to wreck but Mrs Emeye now uses it all the time. Get an XS with leather etc.

Since Mrs Emeye stole my Sorento I find myself looking for something similar to your original spec and budget OP and I'm struggling to find something that isn't a Sorento - Nissan X-trail seems the closest.

I'd go for a petrol L322 FFRR., if you can find one under £5k. Otherwise the very best P38 you can find within budget.
I wouldn't touch any P38; IMO they come across as the car you buy because you desperately wanted a Range Rover at any price. Aim for the lower end of the L322 models but beware; the BMW engines may suffer from borkage due to the Nikasil linings and the alternators are watercooled and can fail. The 5 speed ZF gearboxes are a weak point (same one used on D2 Audi S8s and it kills them off too.) The diesels have engine and transmission issues of their own. And then there's the rust.

So the upshot is; get a Subaru Forester.

My mums WJ does the same things. Its a horrid piece of st that she loves.

These " i need a 4x4 because...." always crack me up. It seems to post a thread like this you need to pretend it is for good reasons. In this example the OP is clearly wanting one because its "stylish" and probably after the status symbol a 4x4 still holds in certain circles. Its definitely not because "it handles well", cause in general they don't.

Just be honest, say "i want one because it will make me look better". All this "I'm an avid woodsman bullst doesn't fool anyone".

I bought a Grand Vitara in April mainly as a second car & for the winter months. It has been fantastic so far & very capable on or off road.

1/8 for 81 miles isn't bad.

That would be 648 miles from a full tank which is 90 litres or roughly 20 gallons?

So 32.4mpg... It wouldn't get that ever haha, my td6 only gets above that at a gentle 70mph.

That ad is a pretty good candidate for the Meaningless Twaddle thread, unless that's where it was 'stolen' from.

Surely the answer to this thread is a VW Touareg? 5k should net a tidy 3.2 petrol.
