The non turbo Foresters have low ratio too
It's not in the segment the OP mentioned though. Size wise it would be a Subaru Justy the OP would be looking for.
No but it was mentioned prior to your comment.

I'd hope it was clear from reading of the thread, I'm sure OP understands, but for your benefit:

OP said, earlier "Thats what I like about forums like this you get completely opposite but honest views.."

You then posited that the SX4 might not be as good as a Focus or Golf on the motorway.

Another poster then suggested that it would be.

I disagreed, in the process agreeing with your earlier suggestion. I also referenced the OP's comment about opposing but honest views.

OP we have exactly the syndrome you referred to here hehe

Clearly we're both right and it is, at the same time both as refined, yet strangely less refined than a Golf whilst on the motorway. Truly a car for all purposes.

I've never heard my SX4 swear or even say pants....so I declare it to be refined biggrin

Wife has has her SX4 GRIP for 3 years and loves it. Not too big, thinks it'll be good in the snow but we haven't had any for 3 years, 38mpg, switchable 4WD, higher driving position for her 5'3" height,
To me it's underpowered and struggles on hills. Steering light but lacks a little feel and the suspension could be better. There again I run a TVR Chimaera and a Volvo 940 Estate. I feel that the underbody bits, crossmember etc could be better protected against corrosion.
Try one, if she replaced hers (an 08 reg) it'll probably be with a later one.
As another poster said though most SX4 are only 2WD (FWD).

I did a bit of research into car based 4x4s and if you're considering a Sedici then worth a look is the 4x4 Seat Altea, it has the both the petrol and diesel Golf GTI engines and is very practical, if not a looker.

Also to state the obvious 4x4 versions of many hatchbacks, saloons and estates are available if you look hard enough, for example the Octavia Scout and 4motion VWs. There's even a 4x4 Suzuki Swift and the Toyota Urban Cruiser seems quite well reviewed too.

Out of your list, if motorway journeys are minimal and it's for bad UK weather only I'd go Panda 4x4. If longer journeys are part of the use the SX4 / Sedici is a bit of an unknown, but strong contender.

OK, well if he genuinely has both and they're comparable age i.e. he's not comparing an SX4 with a mk1/2/3 Golf then he's probably right. I sold Suzukis for several years prior to the SX4 and they're good cars. Reliable, cheap to run, good value and well built just without the soft touch plastics. They also have an "honest" feel to how they drive, which I can't really explain. Easy to drive, not necessarily fun but not unpleasant either. Refinement was never their strong point though. Maybe the SX4 is an improvement in that area though? The only reason I mention the Focus and Golf is that I have driven most of the latest models of this size and those are the two that really stand out for high speed refinement. In fact the mk5 and mk6 Golfs were very good in this respect too.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend making a habit of shutting your eyes when you're driving on the motorway wink

In an outbreak of violent agreement I think "honest" is exactly the right word to describe them. They are what they are, no artifice here, and all the better for it.

A quick YouTube Google will show some pretty impressive offroad ability too.

II still wouldn't call a Forrester a proper offroader as it's approach and departure angles are very bad.

Just looked up the SX4 on honestjohn, as I realised that I didn't know much about them. 20mph/1000rpm in 5th for the 1.6 petrol so not terrible but not ideal either for motorway. The diesel would obviously be better but I wouldn't go near anything with a 1.9 Renault diesel engine or in fact buy any diesel for less than 5000 miles pa.

It's the Fiat Multijet unit, courtesy of the partnership with Fiat, but as I mentioned earlier thread, problematical too.

Seat altea 4x4 a good call if you can find one or these!

I wouldn't call any of the cars in this thread a proper off roader except the Jimny.

They are for a bit of reassurance in snow or going across a field.

My other neighbour (the one without the Forester) has an SX4. She's a lady cop and needs to be out in 'all weathers' to keep the community safe. She likes the car, admittedly it only drives ten miles a day to the nick, but wouldn't have another 'because the A pillars are too thick.'

She admits to nearly mowing down cyclists, pedestrians and other undesirables a couple of times. This shouldn't be a problem on motorways, we presume. She says nothing has gone wrong on the SX4 which is about five years old.

I have run two 2006+ Grand Vitaras including the current 2014, but 30 MPG and £300 VED are not to everyone's liking, though they are superb 'country' cars. Yell if more info is needed.

Edit: I also ran a Panda 4x4 in 2005/2005 or so for a year, and that was a hoot. We had a foot of drifting snow on the back lanes and it handled that like, er, a proper 4x4. Came with M+S tyres and a real joy to drive. They seem to demand a premium used, as a lot of the nursing staff use them.

Sorry, my bad (I assumed wrongly that it was the same engine as the GV) but it makes sense that it would have a Fiat diesel. Is that the GM one? If so, then I'm still oot! smile
